Should I call in sick today/in the morning?

We have been having construction going on outside our building (like right outside our windows on scaffolding ) for the past week on the outside facade - jackhammers, sandblasters, etc. - and it was supposed to end on Friday. It didn't. It's still going on.

Anyway, I have had throbbing headaches all last week and now on Monday and last night which have not let up - feels like a combo tension/migraine - like my eyes are popping out of my head and I can barely see. I can't sleep.

I have taken Advil, used pain patches and Bio-Freeze on my neck and head which are minor relief, but obviously I am still up with a massive headache and I really don't feel like I can deal with another day of jackhammers, etc. Strangely enough, it went away on the weekend and when I wfh on Friday, so I am sure the noise has a lot to do w/ it.

My boss sent out an email last week telling us that we could wfh if the noise was bothering us, but most of us came in anyway not wanting to be "wimps". However it is really taking a toll on me.

I am in a lot of pain that isn't going away and have had no sleep because of it. I am sure I will eventually fall asleep in the very late morning out of exhaustion, but only if I don't go to work. I have 25 vacation days and 5 sick days. I am on top of my work and willing to check in periodically if I feel better. I just always feel guilty, but I can't take another day of this noise on top of my headache, which I don't feel is going to go away anytime soon.

My self-preservation side says no, but my "worker" side says "suck it up" and go in. Not sure what to do. I have a very nice boss, I am sure he would understand, but I don't like disappointing him.

Every day that I have been in w/ this noise I have had killer headaches, but last night and tonight I have not been able to sleep because of them despite the Advil, patches and BioFreeze. Usually they work like a charm, but it's now 5:15 and I still feel like my eyes are about to pop out of my head. I think you are right. Thank you for your advice!

wfh to avoid the noise. It sounds like you're a conscientious employee - not a wimp. In the greater scheme of things, your absence from the office will make no difference, and will likely be to your advantage, allowing you to be a more effective employee in the long run. Your boss offered the option -- why not take it?

wfh one or two days per week. However I will need to take at least half a sick day, since I know that I will probably crash around 8am until noon (my usual weekend habit). The noise has really taken a toll - it's extremely loud and obnoxious, and although you can learn to tune it out, it is always there in the back of your head.

Thanks again!

immediately. I use coffee (a few sips), 3 aspirin and two tylenol (same stuff that is in Excedrin Migraine but cheaper). I also use Imitrex/Sumatriptan if that combo doesn't work in 20 minutes.(for occasional migraines). But I still have to get 32 injections of Botox into my scalp and neck every three months ($13,000 a year). Stay in a dark room too.

Keeping my room dark and cool, but I only have Advil and external pain relief here. It's better than nothing, but thinking of getting the ice packs out of the freezer.

The boss shouldn't just be 'nice' about it. He should be more proactive. If he's "disappointed" that the office conditions are making his staff sick, well, he can do something about it. And really, he is, telling you all you can take time off.

Take the time off. Make clear that it is because of the construction. He gave you "permission", and this way you can avoid long-term damage to your health and hearing. Set a good example for your co-workers!

And if the construction problem persists, see if you can work from home. You'll probably be more productive!

would probably stop last Wed, but might last until Friday. However it has continued into this week. We have a flex work situation so a lot of ppl wfh a few days a week, especially Fridays, but people always have to come in for meetings. It is especially bad for my team because we are all right against the windows where they are working, so it's a constant annoyance.

A number of people have been out sick in the past week, I am not sure if the noise is the reason, but there really is such a thing as noise related illness, including cardiovascular problems, stress-related ailments and headaches "Since noise is a trigger for both migraines and tension-type headaches, there is likely more than one mechanism involved. One study found that those who developed a headache from noise had an increase in their temporal pulse amplitude, which refers to distention or widening of a superficial blood vessel in the face."

It's interesting because the difference between this an many of my other headaches is that my face is actually in pain and completely tensed up. Usually it's just my head, neck, shoulders, but I feel like the muscles in my face have petrified and shrunk and my eyes feel like they are about to pop out of my head. So I am pretty sure the noise is the trigger here.

Thanks for your input!

Get the rest that you need. I certainly hope that the noise, along with headache relents soon.

If the construction doesn't end soon, could you go to work with noise cancelling headphones? Extremely loud and obnoxious noise gives me a massive headache so I can relate in that department.

how such noises can affect us. We had something not even close to what you are describing and it drove us insane. It was one floor above us and sounded like a jackhammer. I couldn't take it even for a few hours. I don't know how you lasted as long as you did!

Do you have noise canceling headphones and earplugs?

Not only that, but it's just annoying and disruptive. I don't have headphones, but could order some from our office supply provider if necessary. We have earplugs, but I find they give me a headache as well. They really bother my ears. I know, I know, I am a special snowflake!

are your 1st priority.

Whether you wfh, take a sick day or a vaca day, stay home.

You know best which option is the right one, and given your boss already told the staff they can work from home, he/she should be amenable.

For your sake, I hope the construction ends soon. But taking care of yourself comes first.

I finally figured out what caused it. I had ordered some CBD oil and gummies and started taking them on Tuesday morning and that is when the headaches started. By that evening they were unbearable and on Wed I was in so much pain that nothing could relieve it. I actually took more thinking it would help, because that is what it is supposed to help with but it only got worse and it just continued through Friday late afternoon when I stopped taking them/it.

I did some research online and apparently some people have bad reactions to CBD including terrible headaches so I am not going to take this anymore. It's not worth it. I have never had such terrible long-lasting headaches in my life. Nothing would relieve it. I tried everything - ibuprofen, ice packs, Salon Pas patches w/ lidocaine, Biofreeze, more ibuprofen. Nothing even put a dent in it.

Usually when I have tension headaches a few Advil and some Salon Pas patches will do the trick, but nothing helped with this. It didn't occur to me until yesterday that it might be the CBD so I looked it up and apparently some people have a bad reaction to it and get terrible headaches.

I am only starting to feel a bit better now since I have been off it since last night. I am not going to take it again. I guess it works miracles for some people, but it is not for me. I checked out a blog and apparently a number of people have the same reaction. It's not for everyone. And certainly not for me. Thank you for checking in. Sorry for the long explanation. I just wanted to warn people. Hope you are doing well!
