(13,608 posts)but only had enough money to bet three horses. I threw the wrong horse out of course. The name of the horse was Big Celebration! It would have paid off $300 and that was late 80's, a good score for me back then.
The time before that I hit a pretty long odds horse on the first race of the daily double and had the favorite in the second. Then my horse decides he doesn't wanna do it today and won't go in the stall! They tried everything but last second scratch! Not my game I guess.

(34,136 posts)He was bred to run, great bloodlines, both parents had done well on the track.
He didn't want to run. First race out he dumped his jockey - now some horses will still run without a rider, this guy just trotted over to the fence and asked for pets from one of the onlookers. Second race he bashed his knee in the gate and took a couple of limping steps before stopping.
I felt good that I didn't lose much money trying out horse racing. When I went to pick him up from the track, one of the trainers was being thrown out - she was caught with drugs (for herself, not for the horses) and had to sell everything she had. I got a golf cart, a hot walker (machine to cool down or exercise horses by walking them around in circles), and second horse to haul back home as a favor. The second horse's owner paid my gas home so I got a nice deal out of it.
ETA - Sold the non-race horse as a hunter and he was a pleasure to his owner until he died at 23 years.
