Ha! Ha! When translations go wrong.

I'm watching this marvelous Mexican comedy-horror series called el Diablero. Mexican culture comes right through. Even though I'm listening with the English dubbing I tend to read the captions as well to see how close it comes, because surprisingly, even in English the words don't match.

But here's a translation that went awry. The actor is doing a crossword puzzle. Without expecting a response he reads the clue: Seven letters, a word that relates to a group of people that share the same blood.

The man's son hears it and says, "Family."

I'm thinking, that's not seven letters. Then it comes to me: "Familia" That's seven letters.

I'm guessing these dubbings don't pay well.

1. I've noticed some foreign shows on Netflix are both dubbed and sub-titled..

in English and the spoken dialogue doesn't match the subtitles. Sometimes it's quite different. I find it distracting and wish they'd go with one or the other. OTOH, I guess having both serve the hard-of-hearing and the blind.

2. Some dubbed shows get double mixed up.

I'm thinking of the ones that have voice dubbing AND English captions, where the verbal English doesn't 't match the written words..
Not a huge problem but slows my brain down trying to match them up with what I am seeing.
