My grandson, senior in high school,

got a Valentine’s tube of chocolates with a nice ribbon attached from an admiring girl.

He is so shy, handsome but not gorgeous.

Scared him a bit because he isn’t used to that.

Told his mom (my daughter) that he hates this day because he didn’t know what to do.

We told him to text her for an ice cream date.

He said that since he will be in college in the fall that maybe dating wasn’t wise...

I told him that as his grannie, he should just relax and have fun. He’s a bit of a nerd, although quite handsome and on the varsity BB team.

I guess I just want you all to know that teenage years aren’t so different from those in the past.

BTW... he is going to text her for a date at the DQ.

Well, we live in the Keys... things are a bit backward here.

You gave him good advice. It's so hard to be young and feel awkward and insecure. NurseJackie Feb 2020 #8

something. She sat down to try to find out what had happened.

Turns out, one of the girls in his class asked him if they could "go steady" as she thought he was so neat.

He didn't want anything to do with that, just wanted to play ball with his friends, but he didn't know how to tell her no without hurting her feelings.

They finally came up with a solution to the problem, but that was the first of many such suggestions in the years ahead.

Third grade!

so looks a little like Buddy Holly. But oddly he is 6’ 4, as premies often do break height boundaries trying to catch up.

Smart as a whip and clever but shy.

I work with teens and I hear about the promiscuity, but in truth, most kids, IMO, have the same angsts that we did at that age. and most tend to be kind and respectful.

All long arms and legs like a colt trying to find his balance, lol, but the kindest heart ever.

He sounds most interesting.

Personally, I would never want to go through my son's high school and college years again. His tumultuous love-life turned me into a nervous wreck. Thank goodness he's almost 33yo and in a most stable relationship now.

My youngest sister lives in Islamorada and I've visited her a couple of times. I must admit, the Florida Keys are beautiful. I wouldn't say that the keys are backward... but I do believe that they're unusual.

We live in Tavernier, hence my handle here, right next to Islamorada, just south of San Pedro Catholic Church. Next time you’re in the neighborhood, give me a shout and we can have a drink or lunch. I always enjoy meeting fellow DU pals, especially another nurse.

And no, we aren’t backward, but the kids are a bit less “worldly” , perhaps because we don’t have malls and lots of places for kids to hang out. School functions and the DQ and Denny’s. The pool at Founders Park. Not exactly Sin City.
