None of that's nice.

(59,878 posts)Women used to make derogatory remarks about his breath and that of his friends when they had a few shots of whiskey, but never noticed an alcohol breath when they drank vodka.
There, when they landed the Smirnoff vodka account, he came up with "It leaves you breathless," the double meaning by no means lost on drinkers. It was of his most successful campaigns of all. In the 1950s, having a Russian name for ANY US-made product was risky. Smirnoff was made by Hublein of Connecticut. The "breathless" campaign surged past all the McCarthyism and put Smirnoff Vodka on the map forever.

(32,710 posts)Years ago, I read a book written by a guy who's father was in advertising.
He was the one who came up with "Man-O-Manischewitz What a Wine!"

(59,878 posts)My grandfather (the ad man, that is) never enjoyed higher education. He made it on his wit alone, and that meant a lot of plays on words.
Once in 1965, we were in a car in downtown Washington DC. My mom was driving. The was LBJ's "War on Poverty" and "Population Explosion" era. Out of nowhere, my grandfather said he thought we needed a "War on Puberty to stem the Copulation Explosion." My mom was laughing so hard, she nearly ran the car up the steps of the old FBI building.
