That's for the baby kale. For grown-up kale, you also have to cut out the bitter stems.

By "beat up" I mean scrunch a bit with your fingers.

It's also good baked until crunchy.

I also didn't like kale until it was prepared correctly. Now I'm a fan.

The gluten free movement has made it harder for people with real food allergies to other things. Some servers and some restaurants do not take other food allergies seriously because they assume it is a fad and not a real allergy. It really sucks to order a meal and either not be able to eat it or eat it unsuspectingly and get violently ill because they ignored your food allergy.

If I fucking want pineapple on my pizza, it's because I enjoy it. Take your bullshit pizza snobbery and shove it up your ass. Same with steak. Sometimes I want it medium, and sometimes I want it well-done, and the places I go to do it well. Also, fuck sommeliers. First off, it's a scam. If one of those pretentious assholes could pass a double-blinded taste test (and those who have tried have failed spectacularly) I'd be surprised, and it's the same with anything else - maybe I've tried the wine you're recommending, and I didn't like it because taste is a personal preference, and I don't care if you think it pairs well with whatever I ordered. If I feel like a Diet Pepsi with my damn filet mignon, that's what I'm having.

Seriously. Jeeze.

61. Tex Mex and Cajun spices with hot peppers on EVERYTHING
Thu Feb 27, 2020, 12:08 AM
Feb 2020

I can't eat hot peppers - if they are on the Scoville Scale, I can't eat them. Too many places put them on without any warning so I have to ask about every dish if I try a new (to me) restaurant.

One of the worst was getting a beautiful fillet of red snapper with what I thought was paprika on top - the way I'd always seen it served - and finding out as soon as the first bite touched my mouth they'd used some powdered hot pepper.

Then I get into the "Are you allergic?" discussion. Technically I am not classified as allergic, but getting blisters when they hit my lips is not a good feeling, not to mention the pain all the way through and for days afterwards.

On a cruise last fall, I ran into that with the ethnic cuisines on board - and they did not indicate if dishes were hot spicy. I had to waste staff time getting them to check the seasonings for me. Finally I was told to simply avoid all Indian and Chinese food on their menu. That was a disappointment since I love trying new foods and I know those groups of foods can include non-hot spiced dishes.

All the salsas now have to have some kind of fruit in them. Mango seems to be a favorite. I love mangos, and I love spicy, but not together!
I don't care so much, in that I realize other people have different tastes, but they quit making the green chili salsa that I loved, and replaced it with some garbage with mangos in it.

I fully expect to see all those claiming multi-pound losses after a while on Keto to become morbidly obese in their futures, and with serious heart disease.

Nothing beats learning to eat sensibly. It might not help one lose weight quickly, but it will stay off long term and with better health outcomes.

I do like a bit of spice depending on the dish. Ghost peppers and the like aren't worth a moments time for cooking.

We ate at PF Chang's a couple weeks ago and they had a horseradish based sauce that lit me up.

Horseradish is not really hot but has an aromatic sense to it that makes me cough and snort

132. Onions or onion powder, in everything.
Fri Feb 28, 2020, 02:24 AM
Feb 2020

Its bad for me because I can't digest it. It freaking kills me. I didn't always have the problem, it just started in mid-life for me.

Try going out to a restaurant and finding a dish that doesn't have it in it. Good luck.

But its in everything at the grocery store too. Tomato catsup. Tomato sauce. Lots of canned veggies. Frozen dinners. Salad dressings. Pork and Beans. Pizza. Chips. Sauces. Soups. Mixes. Anything you buy that has been spiced is full of it. I can't just buy a bottle of Ragu for making spaghetti sauce. I have to make all my own sauce from scratch. If I go to a party or picnic or any covered dish gatherings I can't eat anything except the breads and deserts. All because of the over-use of onion powder. I don't think this world could function without its onion powder. I would be willing to bet that many people who suffer from frequent heartburn are getting it from the onion powder they don't know is hidden in so many of the foods they eat.

157. The United States wheat production changed in the 1960's
Sat Feb 29, 2020, 02:31 AM
Feb 2020

Sometime around the Green Revolution. Since then, there has been an increased problem with gluten issues with people. There are:

2.4 million U.S. citizens that have Celiac Disease, and that doesn't include those that haven't been diagnosed.

As many as 18 million U.S. citizens with Non-Celiac Gluten Sensitivity.

5 million diagnosed with Fibromyalgia, gluten issues are connected to this.

Being gluten-free is NOT at all like the low fat, low carb or whatever stupid trend of the week. Gluten causes symptoms of bloating, constipation, diarrhea, abdominal pain, headaches, severe fatigue, asthma, brain fog, blisters, rashes, depression, anemia, anxiety, joint and muscle pain, dental issues, weight loss or gain, malnutrition, swollen joints, and insomnia.

In total, there can be up to 250+ symptoms that are not all in a persons head, feel free to ask any doctor/dietician/gastroenterologist that specializes in gluten sensitivity. Just because this is your opinion doesn't actually make it a fact.

Speaking of sugar, U.S. sugar production also changed in the 1970's which is the real threat called High Fructose Corn Syrup. Even though this goes through 3 different processes to make, it's still cheaper than sugar so the food companies use it in their food production. As long as consumers keep buying it, it will be continued to made without any thought to the health consequences.
