The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsWe finally turned off cable TV, only have Internet
We are saving $200 a month, all that from Spectrum TV and DVRs. We have not missed anything. The only downside is no Live MSNBC, but we get NBC news which runs relevant clips from Rachel.
We love Film Noir and get 100s and 100s of movies on YouTube. We used to watch them on TCM. YouTube has 1000s of movies. We have a free year of Disney+ from Verizon. We watch Good Doctor the following day on ABC on internet.
Our TVs are Roku and we love all the free TV that App provides. There is Pluto TV with Comedy channel, Game Show Network, etc., 100s of free channels. There are Western channels, Crime drama channels, news, whatever.
We get local news from any city we want, no TV antenna needed. We just got to figure out how we gonna get the MLB package this year. Probably pay for that one, but just have to have baseball.

(34,131 posts)Sling you have to add the News package, which is only $5 over the price for whichever package you get. Not sure how YouTube TV works it since right now I am on Sling.

(14,118 posts)So we have internet and cable tv. I like having the tv on while I'm doing important stuff like posting
ops and replies on DU. Sometimes the cable pays off. A couple days ago our Comcast channel 1766 binge-ran a bunch of Betty Grable movies and today it's Shirley Temple. That's a win for me.
Baked Potato
(7,733 posts)We had Spectrum for 10 years. With just internet and ROKU we have every channel we ever watched before. There is a channel called Pluto TV which has 100s of TV series to watch. And theres free movies everywhere.

Why is there no commercial free 24-hour news channel?

(9,952 posts)I buy netflix and a daughter buys prime time. I mostly watch what is on those but I have to explore the pluto and other apps? I guess. I would like news sometimes. Maybe I can find it somewhere. It is all too much for me mostly. I dropped cable 7 years ago. So glad I did. I am not a huge tv watcher but sometimes I will do binge watching of a series. Right now, I turn on Bones. I have watched that series a couple times.'

(7,733 posts)YouTube has tons of free movies.

(9,952 posts)I have gone on the youtube app and watched pods and clips but didn't know it had movies. Thanks.

(22,231 posts)For example, Free Speech TV is a free channel on ROKU
I can't even get it on my Firestick.
I recently discovered the programs that are actually part of the ROKU itself. I finally found "Major Crimes" the sequel series to "The Closer" and a bunch of movies and other shows.

(38,303 posts)We never see any television commercials.
It's been more than a decade now.
Netflix is $8.99 a month and we also rent movies from the Redbox at our neighborhood grocery store. That's plenty of television.
We have an inexpensive DSL internet connection.
I think television news and opinion is worthless.
Television made trump and to me that's unforgivable.
Baked Potato
(7,733 posts)we are so glad we turned it off. We were so spoiled with the recording ease with the DVRs. Our last child still with us, well shes 35 lol, has Netflix so weve been using that too. Thanks for your comments.

(38,303 posts)... set us up with Netflix.
Our children, nephews, and nieces simply don't understand cable or broadcast television. They control their televisions with their cell phones. There's no channels to change, no need for a remote control. Most use Chromecast.
Besides Netflix, I don't know what streaming services they subscribe to.

(36,259 posts)Amazon offers a discount to vets on about Veterans Day and the cost for a year's subscription to Amazon Prime was less then $90.
We used to get internet from the local telephone company but the download speed was less then 30 Mbs and the cost was $56 a month. Now our download speed is 58 Mbs and the monthly cost is almost $30 less.
Baked Potato
(7,733 posts)for the older TV shows we missed while raising a family. Our internet went from $50 a month to $70 when we turned everything off. But, its fast and its been pretty reliable, so were happy.

(3,761 posts)they are giving MLB.tv subscriptions to customers again this year.
If you join the MLB Player's Alumni Association(MLBPAA) for $25 you can get a subscription to MLB.tv for 1/2 price. Saves about 20-30 dollars. They black-out games local to your region, but games involving teams that would be difficult to follow otherwise are available. Most of my viewing in August-September last year was from games in the National League East and Central divisions.
Look into Minor League streaming also. It can be a pain in the tush as the app is hideous! Last year I used a browser and streamed games from the MiLB web site. In A and even AA ball a lot of the stadiums are much more intimate and involved in the proceedings.

(7,733 posts)Not a T Mobile customer, but Verizon. We are Braves fans pretty much because when I was in the service TBS was in every state so we could watch them everywhere we moved to. It would be nice to just get Fox Sports South for Braves, but we will try to get them all some how.
Gonna have to look at the MLBPAA deal you mentioned. Thanks! And thank goodness its Spring Training ! Lol

(6,928 posts)If you watch a lot of TV at 1080p you can easily go past their 1TB monthly limit. I can't WAIT for the day when I can get comparable speed Internet and tell COX later days. I canceled my cable TV with them two years ago and haven't missed it at all. In fact the tier I had which was next to the lowest was nothing but home shopping network type shows and loads of Pray TV BS and million commercials per day. WHY would anyone pay for that nonsense?
I might add,get a good TV antenna (outside one will always be better) and watch just how many channels you can get for free and in HD. Instead of streaming I watched the Super Bowl though my outside antenna in full 1080p HD and didn't use a byte of Cox's precious data.
Baked Potato
(7,733 posts)but Spectrum is still the best in our area. We also were tired of paying for 100s of channels of BS. Not once were we ever offered any deals or discounts from them. When we brought our box of DVRs in to cancel, they didnt even try to keep us on. Nothing. We may get an outside antenna eventually.
