a common ploy of coyotes is for one to entice another into "play" which seems to be okay but what they will do, I know of this happening in many places, when the pet engages the coyote eventually runs into a low visibility area where the rest of the pack is waiting and they will tear fifi into bits... no matter the size of the dog. Wild canids see any other canid as another canid. Wolves will attack a teacup chihuahua and blast through you to get to it to kill it. They are territorial and see other canids as intruders which need to be disciplined, usually by killing.

So if you see a coyote playing with a pet dog, you should probably chase off the coyote.

I will save the horror stories I know of first hand growing up in AZ w/ a lot of coyotes around.

Always chase them off.

Our dingo was feral, escaped from a sketchy dog breeder. It took animal control months to catch her, and months longer for us to civilize her.

She hates coyotes. They were her competition. She was a chicken thief and coyotes are chicken thieves. No honor among thieves.

The rest of our dogs are larger than coyotes. They'd probably play with them, big goofy idiots like the Airedale in this video.

When I was a kid we had a border collie mix who hated coyotes with a passion similar to our dingo. One morning I got up with her and went out to fetch the newspaper at the bottom of our long driveway. We saw a coyote digging through our garbage cans and she shot after it. They were both rolling around in the road gravel trying to kill each other and I ran down the driveway screaming and yelling like a mad person and the coyote ran off, dog in pursuit.

Idiot dog returned soon after, she was missing a bit of ear, but otherwise not much injured and incredibly full of herself. Fortunately she'd had all her shots.

I have a great deal of respect for coyotes and I don't wish them any harm, but I don't want them messing with my pets.

The coyotes where we live now are damned near invisible, super stealth mode. I only see them a few times a year but we have neighbors who let their cats wander freely who insist coyotes don't exist here because they've never seen one.
