(86,534 posts)I heard about something horrible that happened in a town I moved from recently and it not only bothers me because it's my neighbors but because the details are a major trigger for me and my therapist is out of town for two weeks.
And then there's all this political rubbish... *sigh*

(86,534 posts)but it isn't easy because it has sort of disrupted mt already unusual sleep patterns which makes everything challenging. I spend a lot of time here because I feel like I'm ampng friends... for the most part, not counting the troll factor of course.

(33,643 posts)Talking like ... I could make it about 1 hour after rising before I was at the liquor store ... if I woke up with nothing. And I would make a drink pretty much first thing in the AM if I had some.
I didn't HAVE to quit for any particular reason other than feeling like I was probably killing myself with the booze and ... figured that was a bad idea.
I'm here to tell ya ... it's really not any worse now than it was when I was handling it w/booze. In fact I was probably more pissed off when I was drinking than I am now.
Do I miss it? Of course. But I know it wouldn't make anything better for me, and it'd likely make a bunch of shit worse.
Pretty nice saving all that money I was spending, too

(33,643 posts)I think that 3.5 year long 48-64 percs worth of oxy bender I went on in the early 2000's might've had a permanent effect on my ability to moderate alcohol consumption ...
What's scary is I had so much tolerance by the end that I could easily put away a 750ml bottle a day (every day) and nobody around me would even know it, other than maybe if they smelled it.
Probably helps that my general demeanor is smiling, friendly, laughing and generally comporting myself like an overgrown kid ... with or without booze.

(111,245 posts)When it became clear that alcohol was triggering migraines and I had to say goodbye, I didn't miss the buzz, I missed beer. I grew up on beer and really, really miss it, especially on a hot desert day.

(23,972 posts)I had someone really unhappy with me at the beginning of the week, and then today I got a card from a different mom, thanking me for staying late recently so one of her kids could be brought in by grandma at the end of office hours while mom was at work. The kind note had a Starbucks gift card in it. Im note a coffee drinker, but the card itself had the same effect as a jolt of caffeine - perked me right up at a moment when I really needed it.

(63,902 posts)I rarely think of drinking again and I just realized I am at 6 months totally without any alcohol at all, altho I only drank wine.
However, good news! My first book is going to press and I have had a great breakthrough with my thinking about my second book! And I now have a collaborator who is a good friend and very talented!
My major issue since I stopped drinking is weight gain, not loss. It seems that sugar has taken over my diet so there will have to be cutbacks there.
All else is good!
Aristus
(66,316 posts)That's quite an achievement.
Are you going to favor us all with the title so we can buy a copy?

(63,902 posts)It's a collection of the art essays I published here on DU several years ago (you might not have been around at that time). PM me with your name/address and I will send you one when it is ready (issues with the dpi level on the art work, now being resolved by my book's designer who is my talented daughter).
I was advised that there was a glut on the market of this type of book so given my advanced age anyway why not privately publish and my daughter took it on as a project. I consider it my legacy to my grandchildren (to whom it is dedicated).
I think you will like it. It's a collection of 45 essays I published here ranging over 6 centuries of western European art. I had traveled for over 10 years to Europe, hunting down the art work I wanted to see before I died and I saw a lot.
Edited to add: The title is "Immutable Truth: Essays on Art 2014 - 2017".

(63,902 posts)I'm sorry. I promised to send it to others here and I still have their names and addresses...but all eventually will go out.
Yes, that was an interesting journey. I am hoping to go back to Spain in October with my daughter but am hoping the coronavirus stuff will be settled by then. the travel companies must be screaming DO SOMETHING to trump...
