Me: I went on Costco because I opened my last bag of puppy food. It all costs more online, did you know?
I bought ten pounds of ground coffee ☕️

(3,276 posts)was a giant jar of capers. I joked at the time that it was a lifetime supply. Little did I know that I'd go through that jar and have to go back for more...many months later, but still. I love capers.

(2,042 posts)Against huge jars that have to be refrigerated. First it was Franks hot sauce and currently we have a giant jar of chicken soup base that his parents gave us. Its good stuff but that refrigerator real estate is too valuable 😀

(25,183 posts)a couple of weeks ago, I found next to the Vienna sausages, a tin of some sort of mystery meat product. Think generic Spam.
We'll eat it when we're desperate.

(14,494 posts)After a bad addiction to alcohol for several years, I quit in '90 and sugar took it's place to a degree. I developed a mild addiction after retirement and my son (35 YO) drinks too many soft drinks. Neither of us are overweight so that helps to conceal the issue.
So, I'm hoping the restrictions during this crisis helps us cut way back on sugar. It's certainly has lead to a consciousness of the problem.
Now coffee, that's another issue. No way I'm running out of that shit.

(14,494 posts)just to stash for emergencies.
I grind my own beans and finally found a combo of grinder and beans the suits my taste. But, I fear the bagged beans I like could get scarce and the Maxwell House would do for a while.
Can't scan all the neat stuff on DU each morning without coffee!............

(10,885 posts)Actually, I ordered it online and had to buy 12 in order to qualify for free shipping. It won't go bad, and I'll use it eventually. The supermarkets in my area carry just the boxes of packets rather than the loose granules, and I really dislike those packets. I didn't need anything else, so it seemed like a good idea.

(14,628 posts)They're all spoiled and some are a little chubby. I started cutting back on the amount of food I give them, just a little, just in case. It did not go over well. I think they are planning a group attack and will eat me if the food supply doesn't last.

(14,856 posts)It clips on a finger and only cost me about $30.
That purchase would be VERY odd for me in normal times, but I wanted it in case I get the virus in my lungs and I have to quarantine myself at home. Id like an objective measure how bad off I am in that circumstance.
My SpO2 is at a normal 98% now.

(11,484 posts)Much I needed one longer. Normally just plugged in at night with short one. Shower curtain rings, some broke, maybe because I am not as careful when I open curtain. I read moving fast jerkily etc part of fight flight response.

(17,011 posts)2 40 lb. bags of black oil sunflower seeds and 1 50 lb bag of mixed. I was down to less than a half bag of sunflower seeds. If nothing else, I can keep the critters fed. I assured her that this is the amount I buy about 2x a year.
She also got me 2 cans of coffee and a few more cans of cat food.
She said that the stores here are still in good shape with their stock.

(54,436 posts)Many years ago.
I was presented with the chance to buy the last portrait of Rasputin painted from real life. The completion date is right on the canvas: 16-XII-1916. He is just smiling away like he didn't have a care in the world. I guess that day, he didn't. He was murdered a few days later.
The portrait was painted by Theodora Krarup, a Danish woman who was friends with the Tsarina of Alexander III, the mother of Tsar Nikolai II. After the revolution, she stayed on for a while, but eventually Stalin gave her an ultimatum--either become a Soviet citizen, or leave Russia. She was so angry, she destroyed all paintings in her possession and left. But, of course, ALL of her paintings were no longer in her possession, and this was one of them. The Rasputin painting made its way to London at some time in the early or mid 20th century, and to the USA a few decades later. It showed up in Dallas 15 or 20 years ago at Heritage, and I bought it from them.
Like the line from the first Indiana Jones film: "You and I are just passing through history. This? This IS history."
