(60,436 posts)Hiking a mountain trail near Mürren, in the Berner Oberland, we happened upon a small farm right when they were letting the cows out of the barn after having being cooped up there all winter. One by one, they would trot outside, see the meadow and the sunlight, yell a loud moo and start to buck like broncos. Then they started in on some serious grazing, not having had fresh grass to munch on since the fall, when they had been herded inside for the winter. Being near Lauterbrunnen, there are waterfalls and streams everywhere.

(29,937 posts)I'm jealous of cows living in the Swiss Alps.
Although, the winter cooped up with my own poop might be a bit of a drag.
(I'm sure considerate farmers muck out pretty regularly, though).

(60,436 posts)Then our girls entered school, and we couldn't fit into our schedules any more. That general area, the "Berner Oberland" is one of the most peaceful, awe-inspiring places in Europe.

(29,937 posts)Gorgeous!
I've been to Europe, but not that area.
Closest I got was N. Germany: Aachen, Koln, & the Mosel river valley.

(60,436 posts)I live about 55 KM from Köln, just north of Düsseldorf.
To get to Lauterbrunnen from here, you fly to Zürich, take a train to Interlaken (may have to change in Bern), and then the private train line to Lauterbrunnen. It only takes 20 minutes. Interlaken is already very pretty, but Lauterbrunnen is like the entrance to a different planet. Those photos are not enhanced--it really looks like that! We stayed in the village of Mürren, where no motor vehicles are allowed.

Next time, I promised my husband we'd go to Venice/Slovenia as that's where his family is from.
