Anybody here a birder? Today, on my dying tree in front of my house, I heard a very loud

woodpecker who sounded kinda angry or at least determined. The jackhammer sound lasted only a few minutes, very intense then silent then very intense again. The after a little bit, he/she was gone.

Was it typically a he or a she? Do both sexes drill loudly or just one?

Thank you in advance for sharing your knowledge!

Most do it for nest building, and Acorn Woodpeckers do it to cache acorns.

Woodpeckers are quite fond of them. When one is consumed , a woodpecker hammers on the gutter near the feeder until I put out another cake. Best way to get my attention.
