I know that comedy is often a collaborative process so there's that. Other than that, that was one of the worst presentations on TV I've ever seen.
Tom Hanks's monologue was okay. I guess.
The rap song thing to lead? I knew this was in trouble.
Weekend Update - the added laughter was distracting and forced. Not show material.
The teen girl skit was funny just because my wife and I were laughing because she sounded like our daughter a bit.
Other than that. Just horrible. My 2 cents.

(16,829 posts)It seemed like every person was on their own. This was the first time I've ever found Kate McKinnon annoying. She's a great talent but nothing she did last night was remotely funny.

(112,168 posts)The timing of the "audience" was out-of-sync with the jokes so it actually made some of the punch lines land flat.

(5,523 posts)So it was real laughter from friends and relatives. The show wasn't real great or real funny, but these guys were trying to lighten up life for all us shut ins. There were also contract obligations and time bought in advance.

(25,183 posts)most was so-so at best, but Weekend Update still makes me laugh. Michael Che and Colin Jost are the best pair that SNL has ever had in that spot.

(35,454 posts)These people are supposed to be professionals and not turn in a show that some kids in a basement probably could've done better. They have a writing staff at their disposal though they usually write a lot of their skits. The tribute to Hal Wilner was real and lovely, the best aspect of the show.
Merlot
(9,696 posts)like the other late night shows (Colbert, Meyers, Kimmel) it takes a while to hit their groove. I liked how each person got their own skit. The zoom skit was the worst because they've done that one before and it was just as sexist this time as the first time.
Me.
(35,454 posts)I expect a lot more from a show with its reputation. They've had plenty of time to put it together and all manner of help and expertise was available to them. I'm thinking it's reaching its shelf life.

Life is different. I appreciate the efforts of everyone involved in SNL and all of the other shows that are trying to work with the situation.

Yes it had its moments.

(10,952 posts)got Colin Jost to read the joke was funny. Most of the show I really didn't care for that much.
sfstaxprep
(9,998 posts)Other than Weekend Update, the best parts are usually the pre-recorded sketches.
Given what they had to work with, and the short timeframe, they didn't do a horrible job.
I really wish some of it had at least been Live. It would be nice if they could at least do 1 live segment. Or even get a comedian to do the monologue, so it's got some spontaneity and doesn't have to be perfect.

(9,999 posts)Everyone else seems uncomfortable without audience feedback and it ends up feeling awkward. Oliver just does his thing and doesn't seem to need or miss the audience reaction.

(182,802 posts)Haven't seen Colbert. I've seen Kimmel monologues which are pretty good. I'm not a big fan of Fallon but his at home shows are actually pretty fun. Him reading the monologue (no audience) is funny because you can see on his face how well the joke went. Cool house too.
Oliver is really good even without an audience.

(27,811 posts)I think time will give it some poignancy.
It was a relief to see.anything that wasn't Pandemic TV or a tenth-time re-run of House Hunters.
I liked the Kate MacKinnon one, the woman using Crayola markers for make-up, Chris Martin (not a big favorite, but he sounded good and picked a good song), Weekend Update was okay (and the grieving Michael Che will haunt me), and the Hal Willner piece made.me cry
I can generally do without Pete Davison, and the video game skit did nothing for me but even as it was on, I was thinking someone else probably related to it!

(182,802 posts)It wasn't funny. I would think someone could come up with 3 originals takes other than zoom calls and TP.
The social distancing dance (maybe not funny but set to music) from a waltz to square dancing. Some choreographed thing.
Sorts caster describing someone making their way through a store (like slalom or downhill skiiing ora football running back)
Someone fishing - wink to the viewers in the country and a nothing's changed for me type thing
People trying new hobbies -guitar, new language - with terrible results. Thinking they've mastered Spanish only it's total gobbledegook.
Food channel skit about people trying to make dishes from not quite the right ingredients in their cupboard-cabinets. Like Ida Gardner - Barefoot Contessa
See. Not too hard and it's just my first cup of coffee.

(21,646 posts)the zoom conference because there are people like that . Chris Martin was a good musical guest for song choice Everyything is a compromise right now and at least there was an effort

(25,855 posts)It was decent, but clearly needed a live audience to work properly.
Nonetheless, I was impressed that they put together a show at all.
