(23,224 posts)6. My grandfather taught me as a kid how to get earthworms for fishing.....
He would have me slap the ground with a shovel multiple times, then pour a bucket of water on the ground where I had been slapping. Let it soak in for a bit, then dig. It always seemed to work. His explanation was that the shovel slapping the ground resembled thunder to the worms, so they would climb upward in anticipation of rain--which, in effect, they got when the water was poured onto the ground. Not wanting to drown, they headed upward, which is where I go them with just a little digging.

after a rain, you will see them stomp on the ground jumping up and down to call the worms.
