Grateful Rescue Cat Brings Mom Her Slippers Every Morning

"I didn’t believe her until she got it on camera"

BY STEPHEN MESSENGER

Two years ago, Lulu’s life changed forever. That was when she went from being a sad shelter cat to her mom's much-loved pet.

And Lulu’s been saying “thank you” in her own special way ever since.

A few months after being adopted and settling in to her happy new home, Lulu began an adorable daily ritual. Realizing that her owner liked to put slippers on her feet after waking up, Lulu began bringing them to her every morning, collecting them from wherever her mom had taken them off the day before.

Since Lulu can only carry one slipper at a time, she always makes two trips.

"My mom was surprised [the first time it happened]," Lulu's owner's daughter, Kayla, told The Dodo. "She wore the drool-covered slippers to encourage Lulu." And sure enough, the routine stuck.

Here's a video of Lulu in action: (Note: it's absolutely adorable and be sure to turn up the volume )

That was just the first trip, of course.

Here's Lulu after she went back to fetch the other slipper:

Kayla's mother had told her that Lulu would bring her slippers to her each morning, but Kayla had assumed it was a joke.

"I didn’t believe her until she got it on camera," Kayla said.

But now the whole world knows about the sweet cat's gesture.

'

Though it may be impossible to read Lulu's mind to explain this behavior, the message is clear when you consider her heart.

"It really seems like she just want to take care of my mom, since my mom takes such good care of her," Kayla said.

Beanie ( LL Bean).
She is such a cutie. I wish my cat did that. What a difference in the before and after picture.
Beanie brings us birds. Live ones
3 times now in the house under the table.
I wish she brought slippers.

The squirrels are usually fast enough not to get caught.

Lulu doesn’t get breakfast until mom finds her slippers and can walk onto the cold kitchen tiles. Lulu is facilitating that. Lulu didn’t get rescued. Mom did. That’s how cats think.

they are very good at saying thank you. Like kneading your lap with sharp little claws while sweetly purring.
Yes, I am a cat owner. Yes they get daily smoochie treats and sleep on soft kitty beds. But they don’t fool me. I know who owns who.

We have four rescues. Love them all dearly. They make capitalism transparent. Should make the change to catipalism.

She probably connected "hooman needs to get out of bed to feed me>hooman puts on slippers to get out of bed>kitty can carry slippers..."

That's why it's important not to inadvertently reward bad behavior because animals will pick up on it and repeat it.

I learned my lesson - we used to let the cats go out by lifting a screen on an open window because it was quick and easy to do when they hopped up there. They all quickly learned that if we weren't watching when they wanted back in we'd always come running real fast to open it when they plucked at the screen with their claws enough to make noise, and that this method was far superior and more efficient and wasted less of their precious time than the front door. That was the summer I learned all about replacing screens myself.
