For me it's been Bluetooth headphones and earbuds.
Whether it's been the ability to walk around with tunes or comedy in my head (my brain is too far gone w anxiety for me to be able to read a book or watch a movie), or the noise canceling function that drowns out my kid's Zoom School or my wife's work calls.
What's been your favorite or go to survival item?

(31,513 posts)of a main route through town. I've seen squirrels, rabbits, skunks, possums and raccoons in the past year. I always take a flashlight when I go outside after dark.

(46,032 posts)I have to protect vegetable seedlings from raccoons. The only time I saw a possum, I was sitting in my yard in the middle of the afternoon. I informed it that it was nocturnal and should get some sleep. We do also have skunks around here, but I've only smelled them, not seen them. And at night, I sometimes hear owls.
Up in the hills, where I used to live, one of the main garden pests was deer. I do love Oakland (but not always the deer).

(60,010 posts)we lived in a mobile home park above above Colma. 2000 to 2005.
There was a pack of wolf dogs, I kid you not, on the mountain/hill, they often would go thru my yard, one time they went right past me on my patio. They were very subdued, non-threatening as they filed by.
sadly someone in the area complained they might eat their outdoor cat....wtf!!??
And animal control tracked them down and killed them.
I am still furious about that.

(3,414 posts)It has helped to keep me sane. Being a pack rat at heart, I had plenty of cotton fabric and thread stashed away, so I've been making face masks. After I had enough for my family and myself, I put the masks out at the curb at the front of the house with a sign that said: FREE MASKS
PLEASE TAKE ONLY ONE PER ADULT IN YOUR HOUSEHOLD
LEAVE SOME FOR YOUR NEIGHBORS
Mask is 100% cotton and is pre-washed and pre-shrunk. To wear, slip loop over your head, adjust mask across face to cover mouth and nose, then tie the strings behind your head. Mask should fit snugly on face. Wear ONCE only, then wash in hot water with detergent. Mask can be pressed with an iron set on cotton temperature setting.
When I ran out of elastic and couldn't find more to buy, I switched to using 45" to 47" shoe laces as the tie. Every time I put a new batch of masks out in the box at the curb, they are gone within hours. It's not much, but it helps keep me focused on being part of the solution instead of being part of the problem.

(39,343 posts)I want my wife and daughter to start making some masks too. They've been complaining about being bored and they love to do crafts and sewing.
Do you have a favorite pattern that you are using?
Trailrider1951
(3,414 posts)To use 45" to 48" shoe laces, skip the step that attaches the elastic. Instead, fold top of accent strip (short length) over twice and press. Hem with sewing machine. Then do the same with the strip's bottom edge, trimming to fit, if necessary. Hem the bottom, then fold strip in half lengthwise and press, attaching to the mask body with a seam along the raw edges with the sewing machine. Fold the strip over enclosing the raw edges and seam along the strip's lengthwise fold. This creates a sleeve through which a shoe lace can be threaded, with the ends going the same direction. This makes a loop of shoe lace at the bottom of the mask and the ends at the top of the mask. Put the loop over your head and around the back of your neck. Tie the laces behind your head and adjust the mask body to fit....Hope this helps!
