The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsI have done long posts in the Lounge reviewing whisky
And even longer posts reviewing whiskey.
Well this one is not going to be long,
I bought a bottle of Woodford Reserve Rye today.
It will sit in my cupboard next to the Bulleit Rye and the half pint or so of Sazerac I have left.
It ain't bad. It's just kind of a middlin' "not here to bother alla yinz" whiskey.
Better whisky for similar prices abound. If your reaction is "Really?"
Well
YES REALLY.
All of the Irish whiskeys you recognize for 40 bucks are better.
Every iteration of the new Old Forrester lineup is better. And only a few cost more.
In fact - the apples to apples match up of Rye Whisky goes to Old Forrester - BY A HANDFUL OF MILES
Cannot over sell how good the O/F Rye is at half its price.
Also - if you'd like a mild Scotch rather than the bite-y hard core flavor of Rye - Monkey Shoulder is about the same price point as Woodford Rye where I shop
So. To summarize - If you just want a Woodford bottle on the shelf because they look cool, buy whatever is on sale.
If you want a good Woodford whiskey buy some double oaked bourbon.
Leave this alone unless you like the specific barrel bitterness and stale nutmeg/cinnamon black pepper flavor that Woodford Rye gives you.
I don't.

(24,626 posts)My dad did, he used to do a small whiskey and water every day before he left for work. So did a lot of his friends....and they were a damn good manufacturing team coming out of WW2. Then we created business schools and the jobs went away.
But I've put a healthy dent in a 12 pack of Sam Adam's Boston Lager (cans). So I may be in the same place.

(66,467 posts)I just finished a bottle not long ago. Smooth as oil.
I recently picked up a bottle of local Bourbon distilled in Woodinville, Washington. (Any bourbon distilled outside of Bourbon County, Kentucky is supposed to be labelled 'sour mash', but there it is, bourbon, right on the bottle...)
Once I'm done with that, I'm going back to O/F.

I live in an area where the stores don't really carry much Old Forrester, so I found it after a wine and liquor mega mart opened.
I soon became a BIG fan of their line up. All of it the Bourbons are top notch and even the 86Proof bourbon is a smooth classic bourbon.
Step in with an extra $25 bucks to spend and buy the 1920 Prohibition style for a real treat. This is currently my "For Company/special events whiskey"
But the O.F. Rye in particular punches above its weight. A 750 of the O.F. 100 Proof Straight Rye costs $20 (after Illinois taxes) at that mega mart.
The Woodford Rye I reviewed here was on sale for $33, and normally runs 6-7 bucks higher, but it had a much less vibrant, more muddled flavor.
It also has a less sharp rye spice presentation.
A bunch of folks prefer a quieter softer Rye, and if that's you - then W.R. is probably a good choice.
After all- It is still Woodford.
They don't produce any rotgut shitty liquor.
BUT OTOH - I like rye with a pallet that fights you a little and has a better (More perfumey) spicy nose.
I described the W.R. rye spice flavors as "Stale" in the OP but maybe "Muted' is a better adjective.
Bottom line though - After I eat dinner I'm gonna pour a glass of Wild Turkey 101 with some ice andthe Woodford will sit in my cupboard
