(14,852 posts)... by getting the dog super-hyper about Dad coming home.
Whining, moving in tight circles, "pawing" at the door, etc.
I was basically imitating the dog, but that feedback would make the dog even more that way. *
(The dog would often imitate me too, like stretching and yawning immediately after I did it.)
Edit: Someone will probably reply that I damaged that dog's brain or whatever. (It seemed like a super-happy dog to me.) I feel bad about irritating my dear Mom, though.
* I'd get the dog worked up, then quietly sit down just before Dad walked in the house. The dog would then act like it hadn't seen Dad in YEARS (instead of just a workday), licking and clutching to him.
Dad would laugh and be surprised by such extreme affection, which is what I enjoyed.
It often made the videos of soldiers returning home to their adoring dogs look lame in comparison.

(4,157 posts)I'll bet that your Mom told your Dad how you got the dog so excited for him. I think it was an extension of yourself.

(14,852 posts)Dad was a "hard-as-nails" kind of guy who was hard to show affection in that way, but I always appreciated and loved him.
Even when he was dying on a hospital bed, I could only pat him on a shoulder without it seeming weird somehow. (My older siblings always felt the same way, especially the brothers.)
I didn't even think of that until you mentioned it. Thanks!
