But if you were to ask him, I am sure he considers me part of “his” pack. A neighbor technically “owns” this dog, but my daughter and I dog-sit quite often, and this dog loves us.

His name is Zackie. He’s a five-year-old Aussie/Border Collie mix, we think, and he is the smartest and best dog we have ever met. He’s literally funny. He is also a bundle of energy who demands a lot of attention, but he brings a smile to my face every day. It’s well worth my time to interact with this beautiful and healthy dog.

He can catch a frisbee like nobody’s business. He can snoot and boop. He is obedient and outrageously eager to please. He’s like velcro. When we go on walks, I never need a leash. He sticks close by, no matter what. Despite those intimidating teeth and fearsome jaws, he’s utterly gentle—child and cat safe. He chases neither birds, nor squirrels, nor cars, nor cats—nothing except designated toys. I can easily feed him by hand. In fact, I could comfortably put my hand in those powerful scissor jaws and be certain that he would never bite me. He’s truly remarkable.

I would love a situation like that. I can't quite handle the full responsiblity of a dog right now, but love spending time with them.

Zackie sounds wonderful! He is so cute! What an amazing dog! Border Collies and Aussies are two of the most intelligent breeds in the dog world. It's incredible what they can be trained to do. Enjoy your time with him!

This dog needs a few sheep, goats, or cattle to manage. It has far too much energy for me, but I adore this dog, and he is super-smart. My daughter and I are in an ideal situation as neighbor dog-sitters.

Brown eyes (the merle and mixed eyes are a marker for blindness/eye trouble), not a hint of white on his ears (that’s a marker for deafness/hearing trouble), a luxurious, wavy black coat, and traditional (two-toned) border collie markings—plus super-cute white socks on paws that he cleans meticulously. This is a beautiful dog (if, to you, beautiful includes healthy). To me, it does.
