It was groundbreaking, at least as far as all but one or two early 70s tv sitcoms could be.

In Room, the teachers and the principal were adults, who cared for the students and each other and were good role models for the students

Kotter played everything for somewhat mean-spirited laughs. Students scored points off each other and teacher

You could kind of imagine being part of the Room world---Kotter was the stereotypical dysfunctional 'modern city HS with no discipline and no learning.
