The Top Ten reasons to wear a mask are:
10) Think of all the money you'll save on toothpaste and mouthwash
9) They have cool ones that you can write on (!Trump NEEDS to GO!) and cool colors too
8) No one will ever be able to read your lips again
7) You don't have to smile and pretend you're happy anymore
6) It's Wednesday?
5) You can mumble dirty words and pretend someone else said them
4) What a relief it'll be to get home and take the damn thing off
3) Trump will make fun of you (that's a badge of honor to me)
2) All those security cameras are now worthless
-
-
And the number one reason to wear a mask is (drumroll please):
-
-
-
1) Because now, you'll know who all the good guys are!

Face Masks Really Do Matter. The Scientific Evidence Is Growing.
Face masks are emerging as one of the most powerful weapons to fight the novel coronavirus, with growing evidence that facial coverings help prevent transmissioneven if an infected wearer is in close contact with others.
Robert Redfield, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said he believes the pandemic could be brought under control over the next four to eight weeks if we could get everybody to wear a mask right now. His comments, made Tuesday with the Journal of the American Medical Association...

Confrontations over face masks and the psychology behind why some people resist them
Several videos surfaced on social media showing customers refusing to wear a face covering in stores, some leading to violent confrontations, as states began to reopen and ease social distancing requirements.
While the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends face coverings to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, some believe it is a violation against their constitutional rights.
"When people sense that another person is trying to control their decision, some people are going to act out against that control, whereas others are going to go along with it," Dr. Vaile Wright, senior director of Health Care Innovation at the American Psychological Association, told USA TODAY.
Some people are also just feeling tired and scared amid the pandemic, which can contribute to carelessness and angry resistance towards face masks, psychologists said.

Mask mandates continue to spark outrage as virus vaccine trials ramp up
For the first time in more than two weeks, Florida reported fewer than 9,000 new coronavirus cases, but it's no reason for anyone there to let down their guard. In Miami-Dade County, the number of COVID-19 hospitalizations went up Monday.
The news comes as Florida surpassed New York in confirmed coronavirus cases. Florida has no mandatory mask order, but one in Palm Beach County survived a legal challenge on Monday.
While Planet Fitness joined the number of companies now requiring face coverings, nationwide the controversy won't go away.
"They can't tell me I have to wear a mask," Florida resident Drew Read told CBS affiliate WINK-TV. "I'm not going to wear a mask to make somebody feel comfortable."

Anti-maskers are the new anti-vaxxers
It used to be that Dr. Rashid Buttar was well known only in alternative-medicine circles, where he promoted an anti-vaccine agenda.
But when the coronavirus pandemic hit, his message expanded. In addition to vaccines, he's now lambasting face masks.
Buttar, an osteopathic physician and conspiracy theorist, recently bragged that a conference he organized over Memorial Day weekend attracted hundreds of people "from all over the world" who didn't wear masks indoors. He has falsely claimed that face coverings reduce your oxygen intake, lead to toxin inhalation, impair your immune system, and highlight "your disturbing stupidity."
People who wear them, he said, are "COVIDiots."

Walmart Employees Will Not Turn Away Customers Who Refuse To Wear A Face Mask
Though Walmart is requiring customers to wear face masks in all of its stores, the chain, like many others, will not require employees to enforce this policy and has instructed associates to still serve customers who do not wear masks, according to a recent report by CNN.
The outlet cited retailers like CVS, Walgreens, Lowe's, and Home Depot among those that have said they will not prevent mask-less shoppers from shopping in their stores, citing fears that these shoppers will get violent or otherwise harass these workers. CNN mentioned the recent trend in viral videos, showing anti-mask customers yelling at workers and in some cases, getting physical.
These videos have raised questions about who is "responsible" for enforcing such policies and how strictly they should be enforced. President of the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union Stuart Appelbaum told CNN that it should be up to security or management to handle enforcing the requirement.
"It's no different than wearing shoes or a shirt," he said, in part, but went on to say that if no one enforces these new requirements, stores "never had a requirement. All they had was a public relations stunt."

Minnesota GOP official who posted image linking mask wearing to Nazi Germany resigns
A Minnesota Republican Party official resigned after an image was posted on Facebook comparing mandates requiring residents to wear masks during the coronavirus pandemic to Jewish people being forced to wear Stars of David in Nazi Germany.
Minnesota Republican Party Chairwoman Jennifer Carnahan confirmed the county official's resignation in a statement on Tuesday after initially stating that the Wabasha County Republican Party's Facebook page had possibly been hacked.
"Upon further investigation, the @mngop learned the Wabasha County FB page was not hacked last night, as believed by the Wabasha Chair," Carnahan said in a statement. "The offensive picture was unfortunately posted by a board member who has resigned effective immediately at the party's request."
Carnahan wrote that the Wabasha County Board and the Minnesota GOP apologize for the "disappointing" post.

Archeologists May Have Found the Source of Stonehenges Massive Stones
One of the worlds greatest mysteries is where the ancient people who built Stonehenge actually got those massive stones. Now, scientists have discovered a possible clue to answering this age-old question.
According to CNN, archeologists announced that they have potentially located the origin of the famous sarsen stones, which make up the formation of Stonehenge. The stones are likely to have originated in the West Woods near Marlborough, about 15 miles from the structure itself.
There have been lots of theories about the stones over the centuries, both touching on where they came from as well as how they were transported to their final location in Wiltshire, England, CNN reported There are actually two types of stones used to make up the Neolithic circle, and the recent discovery applies to only one of the types (sarsen, or megaliths). The other type, bluestones, are smaller than the sarsen stones and are thought to have originated in the Preseli Hills in south west Wales, according to CNN.

Michigan Official Repeatedly Uses N-Word After Refusing to Wear Mask, Says He Doesn't Regret It
A county official in northern Michigan is facing calls to resign his position on the Leelanau County Road Commission, after he repeatedly used racial slurs during a public meeting earlier this week.
Tom Eckerle, a member of the county's road commission, used the N-word while responding to a question about why he wasn't wearing a mask prior to the Tuesday meeting, the Leelanau Enterprise reported.
"This whole thing is because of them n*****s in Detroit," Eckerle said, according to the paper.
Eckerle, a white man, reiterated his comments to his colleagues and said the Black Lives Matter movement was "taking the country away from us," the Leelanau Enterprise reported. He continued defending his comments in an interview with Interlochen Public Radio on Thursday, during which he said, "I don't regret calling it an n----r," and added, "that's not a person whatsoever."

Some people listen to health experts, others ignore them: What it means for America's future with COVID-19
Since COVID-19 arrived in the U.S. earlier this year, the virus has sickened more than 5 million Americans, claimed at least 167,000 lives and wrought financial ruin.
Some Americans have been dutifully following the recommendations of public health experts forgoing touch, cancelling travel, holing up at home with young kids while attempting work. Others have balked at the most basic precautions, refusing to wear masks and continuing to gather in large groups.
Psychology and public health experts say variations in how people respond to public health recommendations can be attributed to differences in how they navigate threats as well as social and cultural factors. These factors may also influence whether people are able to sustain behavior changes for the long haul ahead exhausted parents, frayed frontline workers, the millions of Americans worn down by isolation.
"It is easy to think that people dont follow the recommendations because they dont want to, but there are also systemic and situational issues at play that affect peoples behavior," said Stephen Broomell, an associate professor at Carnegie Mellon University who studies judgment and decision making under uncertainty. "These can range from problems with communication, comprehension and personal risk assessment."

Face Masks Need The Kind Of Marketing That Sold America On Seat Belts
Research into advertising messaging in Illinois suggests face masks might be able to borrow some of the hard-won lifesaving cache seat belts built up over the last six decades. Indeed, the struggle towards national acceptance of seat belts can teach us a lot about how people are reacting to face masks, and hopefully, allow us to get towards mass mask-wearing more quickly.
A new study on effective face mask messaging in Illinois by Civis Analytics found that 92 percent of respondents were more likely to wear a mask after view advertising comparing masks to seat belts, three percent more than those who did not, according to Bloomberg.
About 92% of respondents who were shown the message that compared masks to helmets and seatbelts were likely to wear a mask, compared to 89% of the respondents in the control group. A 3 percentage point increase may not seem like much, but Civis says messages like these tend to have a lower effect for issues that people have already been highly exposed to. People have heard so much about it that their opinions are strongly held, Crystal Son, health care analytics director at Civis, said in an email. Given the saturation of messaging around Covid and masks, a 3 [percentage point] treatment effect is both statistically significant and meaningful.
At the moment apparently only 66 percent of Illinois residents say they wear a mask every time they leave the house. Thats much higher than the national average of 44 percent, according to a Gallup poll. And thats in a state that will penalize businesses for not enforcing mask-wearing on their premises and recently made it a federal offense to assault workers enforcing such rules.

Fed up with anti-maskers, mask advocates are demanding mandates, fines and common courtesy
Susan van Vonno has strong feelings about masks. At 82, with a compromised immune system, she has little patience for bellicose anti-maskers who refuse to cover their faces because they believe it infringes on their personal liberty.
Do you want to be free, or do you want to be dead? she asks.
So far, van Vonno has kept those feelings mostly to herself. But at a recent museum board meeting in Melbourne, Fla., she was one of only two people out of 10 wearing a mask. She said nothing at the time, but she wishes she had.
I thought about it, she said, and I need to bring it up.
