There was a movie featuring both bands, which highlighted how ridiculous it all was. It was called "Dig!" Of course, each band's fan base was equally divided. Funny thread on the two:

Maybe that's deliberate, or else the singer has a soft voice.

Never heard of them either, but here's another modern band I'd also never heard of who sound like they're from the 60's to me as well. Kind of a Kinks vibe, maybe.
