We have a chihuahua we got from a shelter. She exhibited similar traits (shaking, cowering in her crate). They suspect she was abused in her past circumstances.

It took her just a few days to become the sweetest, most open, loving little thing on the planet. I never imagined chihuahuas being my breed of dog, and now I'm obsessed.

I love all breeds. I have 4 cats now, because I can't walk much, but I have close relationships with all my friend's dogs--all different breeds.

We got one from my mother in law. She kept the dog and her littermate as outdoor dogs. They kept running away and one day the other dog disappeared. Our dog was miserable all alone, so we volunteered to take her. We kept her indoors. She was a good pet. She frequently cowered and shook, but don't believe she did so in her crate.

in my precinct who do chihuahua rescues. I go over there often to place signs and get signatures on petitions. I am always greeted by five or so boisterous barking doggies.
