Every time I think about going to a salon or barber shop, I think about those hair stylists and barbers I've heard about who turned up COVID-19 positive after servicing hundreds of clients. That is a pretty intimate kind of personal contact, and I don't want to be one of those clients.
I'm 70 years old, retired and living alone. I'm beginning to think about the bowl-and-scissors method.
Do any of y'all have any suggestions?

(8,203 posts)I bet you can do a passable job--better than bowl and scissors. And if you mess up too badly, just know that people are very understanding of bad or overdue haircuts these days, although it can be hard on one's self-image.

(3,972 posts)got myself a flowbee, if you don't want to spend that much they sell hair trimming combs, I have 2 of those. I'm a 71 yr old female and I've been cutting my own hair since my 20's. Happiness hunting

(12,712 posts)A few years back, haircuts started to seem way too expensive for me on no budget.
So, for $18, I picked up an electric hair cutting kit with attachments, a comb, scissors, etc. I learned to carefully drag it back through my slightly damp hair, (as per recommendations) using only a few attachments, (they are graduated from longer to shorter).
It really didn't take too long to get the hang of it if you are slow, patient, careful and let yourself get the hang of it. So, I save the money on haircuts now and and can have one anytime I need it. No fancy hair styles, of course; just basic.
The only hard part is getting the back at the nape of the neck trimmed with you are done. You can reach around looking at another mirror in the mirror and snip it, but it is better to have someone do that for you if you have someone.

That was around 25 years ago.
My hair is about a foot long, and that's where it's been for many years now. The growth/fallout/replacement rate appears to have reached equilibrium.

I have Charlie Manson crazy hair now, but with axle grease I can slick it back to an almost Mick Fleetwood hairstyle, without the yet to develop stubby ponytail.

(5,640 posts)even shipping them anymore. Edited to say: Just checked their site and looks like the price is less than 200$ , so good deal if you can find one.
I've been checking out this product lately and still am not ready to pull the trigger. RoboCut. It even comes with its own vacuum. But 189$ is still kind of steep...

Thanks for the tip, looks like a better Flowbee alternative.

(5,640 posts)There are lots of videos on YouTube for the RoboCut to show you how to do it.
Also, the videos on the Haircut.com website are informative as well.
Good luck!

(7,473 posts)I'm in my 70's and also worried but I now look like a witch.
I called the salon weeks ago and left a message that I needed a cut when they open.
Got a call last week.
They are opening this week and have a time for me in Tuesday,
Strict rules.
Appointment only, one person in shop at a time.
Stay in car, they will come for me with cape.
I must wear mask and gloves
Cash only, in envelope.
Cuts only, no shampoo or other services.
I admit I am a little nervous but I can't stand it any longer. I was due for a cut in February, can you imagine what it looks like now?
I'd scare the heck out of anyone.

(7,473 posts)I will be leaving two envelopes, one for the cut, one for the tip. I am leaving extra $$ in both. This shop is small, run by a family that has been a great service to me for about 15 years.
It is not like I have extra $$ but I feel like the small town businesses are in trouble now and any way I can help benefits them and me. I'd hate to see them close.
My town has a ton of empty shops now. Sad sight to see everywhere.
AND, it will get me out of this darn house for an hour. The walls are closing in.

(7,715 posts)I never did this before, but I've given myself basically 4 haircuts since the lockdown began. It's not bad, and the kit has more than paid for itself in haircut savings.
Just use the electric clippers and cut AWAY from the direction of the growth of the hair. It won't be bad at all (I prefer short, rather than styled, hair, so this works perfectly for me). If you're looking for something styled etc., you might need someone to help.
Once this horrible time ends, will I continue to do this? I'm not sure, but I now have the confidence that I can do it and have it look reasonably good. And, like I said, I've paid for the clipper kit more than 3x over since I got it.
All the best!

(21,765 posts)She will not allow anyone in without a mask, and she told me a few of her regular customers got mad and walked out, even though she has masks available for the unprepared. She was also wiping the chair down with disinfectant between customers, and seemed to be taking the risks very seriously.
My hair is very unruly. Felt good to get it back under control.

(47,552 posts)That's what I'm doing. I bought a set of clippers from Best Buy, and after about 5 weeks of staring at the box, and staring at my Jim Traficant hair in the mirror, I finally went for it. I do live with four other people, though, two of whom I would trust to help if I needed it. So far, the effed up parts are that it's damn near impossible to "clean up" the back of the neck, and that my arms get tired if I'm at it too long. Also, I'm not that good at it and if there weren't a pandemic going on I'd gladly throw my clippers away and start throwing money at Supercuts again.

(22,037 posts)It's not that hard and I've done it twice since the beginning to the Covid-19 crisis.
Buy a barber-quality electric razor with the multiple attachments. Pick the longest attachment, (my longest is No. 5). Power it up and rub that thing all over your skull until hair stops falling off of your head. The crown of your head will be the hardest part to get right but be persistent. Carefully trim around your ears and, VIOLA: You will be presentable!
P.S. Don't forget to trim your eyebrows and ear hair. You gotta be sexy, huh?!
