(966 posts)Wildlife conservation urges that more deer babies are killed by human intervention than by abandonment. They urge: Leave the fawn alone.
OTH, there are so many excess deer doing so much damage to our woods and wild spaces, I think the fewer deer that reproduce, the better.

(32,264 posts)He has several deer that follow a trail through the woods just behind his house. They don't seem bothered by his presence any more and will watch him from a respectable distance while he does his chores.

(18,768 posts)Apparently, when they are really young they dont have a scent so the moms forage away from them to keep them safe from predators. They arent like horses and take a little bit to get their legs working. It was to let people know they werent lost or abandoned and not to move them. Oh... and so cute!!! Squeeeee!!!

(2,963 posts)danger, its ok to move them off the road where they are out of danger. Our scent on them wont bother mom.

(14,337 posts)Females of the same species (deer, turkey, ducks) always travel together, with young and without. You will almost never see a male with them. I call them the "Girls Clubs".
A female of the same species will adopt a young one as her own. Hearing distress signal from them? Since you live in a small city, just make sure he is out of harms way, as near traffic. If something happened to his mother, another doe will take care of him. Survival of the species.

(57,484 posts)moved about 10 feet up against the house. He's been alone for almost 8 hours that I'm aware of. Do I just continue to wait for his mom until morning?

Bayard
(28,987 posts)If its been 8 hours, without feeding, I think I would call a wildlife rescue. Maybe something happened to the mom, or he has something wrong that would cause her to abandon him. But he really needs nourishment.
Niagara
(11,639 posts)I believe it's normal for her to be gone for up to 12-24 hours foraging for food. I know his/her "helpless" factor is a valid concern, please have a little more patience for Momma to return.
