Why brands like Oreo are cutting back on wacky flavors right now
Shoppers are stocking up on items to eat at home, and they're finding less variety on grocery store shelves.
That's partly because items are selling out more quickly than they used to. But it's also because major food companies the ones that make our cookies, chips and canned soups have been paring down their product offerings.
When stay-at-home orders went into effect this spring, Mondelez, General Mills, PepsiCo, J.M. Smucker, Campbell, Coca-Cola and others saw a massive spike in demand for some products. To help meet that increase, they sped up production lines on their most popular items - and that meant cutting back on more fringe offerings. That translates to fewer varieties of Jif peanut butter, Oreo cookies and Frito-Lay chips at the store.
The reason behind the move: Manufacturing plants for major food companies typically have to pause their production lines to switch out the product and packaging when they go from making one variety of cereal, for example, to another.
"There's significant time required to change lines," said Jonathon Nudi, General Mill's group president of North America retail, during a March conference call with analysts. He added that making fewer products is one way to simplify the supply chain.

(60,175 posts)I had heard about tiramisu Oreo cookies, they were actually in the store this month, so tried them.
Pretty good, but now my curiosity is satisfied, don't mind if they disappear to make room for original Oreos.

but with the double stuffing (stuffing?).

(15,805 posts)sounds pretty decadent to me. Haven't opened them yet, but I like the new flavor combo.
I'm pretty much well stocked with the basics and staples, so I find I'm trying lots of new foods and recipes since being confined at home. Like most people I was stuck in a rut with the same foods and recipes is been making for years.
Now that everything seems boring I'm finding a creative outlet in foods that I've never tried. Looking at different produce - have you tried cactus? The peeled pads taste lemony and make a refreshing addition to salads - lots of interesting things.

Are they really that good?

(15,805 posts)including a wide variety of cactus parts. You can cook them or serve them raw. I bought fresh prepped Nopalitos, the cut flat stems, called pads, of prickly pear cactus. I suppose they must come from farms since they are sold everywhere.
For the salad I blanched the pieces, rinsed well and then put them in a ice water bath. They have a little crunch and a tart, lemon taste. I added tomatoes, onions, avocados, radishes, cilantro, chopped spinach and lettuce. I made a lime and cilantro vinaigrette. It was very good and I will make it again, maybe adding some spicy Mexican flavored meat.

I prefer it raw. It is healthy.
Prickly pear is a major weed, so why not eat it? I have one plant and it is the gift that keeps on giving..LOL
I have no idea if they have separate farms or if the bagged cactus isn't just someone's weed?

(60,175 posts)Had the pan lying around forever. Somehow got enthused by a killer chocolate cake recipe with a very
addictive glaze, it turns out. It turned out great, and was so much easier than dealing with cake tins.
there's a lemon cake recipe I'm dying to try next....

(10,029 posts)Yet another whacky flavor delay. How much longer does one have to wait for butterscotch-roquefort cream-filled Oreos to finally make it to the the grocery shelf???

you've gotta be kidding, right?

(10,029 posts)Just momentarily dreaming up a possible flavor-incompatible concoction that would hopefully never see the light of day! But one never knows what will turn up next, given the "whacky flavor" rage and willingness of people to try them.

(2,137 posts)and their range of flavors when I saw "Cookies 'n Cream" flavored Oreos. Why?! Oreos are already cookies. That's like making tequila-flavored vodka.
(Rant over. Sorry, but I get very passionate about food-related issues. I am quite liberal on most other issues, but I confess to being a conservative old fart about certain food concepts.)

I'm almost surprised that puffs of dry black powder didn't come out of my mouth the last time I ate them.
