Our eldest kitty of 18 years is nearing her end. She hasn't eaten or drunk water in 48 hours. She can barely walk four steps without falling older. She's been of poor health the past couple of years but has never gotten this bad. When we first rescued her 17 years ago she was a petite little thing that put the fear of cat into our pair of rescue shepherds. She outlived that pair and proceeded to train two more and outlived them. Even in her advanced age she trained shepherd #5 to coexist or get your ass kicked.
Her nickname was "Thunderfoot", coming from the shelter with a chronic respiratory problem she was also bowlegged. At 4-5 pounds she would walk across the floor in the middle of the night on a wood floor and you'd hear her across the house. She was the queen of the house and always dominated the other rescue cats who were all bigger than her.
She resting comfortable now, breathing slow. Can hardly open her eyes but responds when I scratch between her ears. She
seems not in pain so we've chosen to let her go on her terms.
Moments are precious right now.
UPDATE:
At 430 today she passed when I got home from work. She passed at home on her terms peacefully by the window on her blanket. Silence is so sad.

The veterinarian's staff wouldn't let me leave their office until I could go 15 minutes without breaking down and crying. It took 90 minutes.

(34,105 posts)They are your best friends and also your children. I lost 5 last year. 2 of the cats and one dog went in my arms. Be well and be safe and love your dear kitty out of this world. She certainly feels safe to go on her own terms with you there. The greatest gift you have left to give her.

(16,935 posts)Your kitty has had a good life, 18 years! My old boy cat just passed yesterday, after a short and sudden downturn. I buried him by the appletree our kids and grandkids planted in memory of my husband. I hope they met on the other side of the bridge. I covered Flash's grave with impatiens seeds. We had Flash for 16 years. He was the best non-verbal communicator I've ever met. I was so sorry his last days were so hard, maybe not on him, but on me. I have 2 other cats and they miss him too. I'll think of you in these last few days as you say goodbye to your dear Thunderfoot.
