NASCAR official: Sport ‘just wouldn't be the same’ without Confederate flag flown prior to final lap

After NASCAR announced Wednesday that it was prohibiting the Confederate flag at all its events and properties, they quickly backtracked a day later vowing to never remove the one true Confederate flag which has been flown at every NASCAR race for decades.

When asked why the quick reversal of their previously stated policy, Steve O’Donnell, NASCAR executive vice president and chief racing development officer, told SiriusXM NASCAR Radio on Thursday:

"We felt this particular Confederate flag is as much a part of NASCAR as it was to the Confederate States of America for very different reasons. As such after careful review, we have decided to continue our long held tradition and heritage of flying the flag at the start of the final lap of the race as we have done since the beginnings of NASCAR."
