I was just smitten by this version of Black Hole Sun by Norah Jones...
Till I stumbled onto that my only better than the original cover was Cowboy Junkies sweet Jane. It played in the Natural Born Killers movie and was the best of that film at least for me.
Better covers anyone?

(9,975 posts)Very cool....Having said that, Johnny Cash's is still my favorite version because of the horns....In any case, what a great song!

(1,038 posts)Johnny Cash's cover of Hurt from Trent Reznor and Nine Inch Nails is an unexpected treasure.
But I like the original too.
I normally avoid country music, but Gary Allan's cover of Best i Ever Had by Vertical Horizon completely eclipsed the original.
Original for comparison:

(63,747 posts)IIRC, when Reznor was asked about Cash playing their song he said something like "It's HIS song now."
A song about addiction by a man who has fought those battles personally.

(9,975 posts)Gary Jules definitely brings (as someone else mentioned) that "haunting" element. It's perfect......
...."and I think it's kind of funny, I think it's kind of sad"
...."the dreams in which I'm dying are the best I've ever had"
This hold a weird and special meaning for me because I very seldom have good or great dreams (in my entire life) but three of the best one's I've had were me in an afterlife and they were amazing...
I think the first time I heard this song was in the movie Donnie Darko...

(63,221 posts)Preferred the Gary Jules cover to the original by "Tears for Fears". They are both good, but I find the cover version so much more hauntingly beautiful.

(18,373 posts)Great writer, so-so musician.
I've decided I like the Beatles's "Twist and Shout" more than the Isleys's, and Guns and Roses's "Sympathy For the Devil" more than the Stones's. Maybe ELO's "Roll Over Beethoven" more than Chuck Berry's, although they are really not comparable versions.
I prefer Carl Perkin's "Blue Suede Shoes" over Big Mama Thornton's.
There are others, but these occur off the top of my head.

(2,362 posts)And Rage Against The Machine made a statement with their version of Springsteen'a Ghost of Tom Joad (the first minute or so of this video is the epic "mad as Hell" rant from the movie Network)
And Kinky Friedman takes a tongue-in-cheek Warren Zevon song in a somber direction
