I had to tell a little boy to get away from me today.

My car was in the street in front of my house. Hood was up. I was putting brake fluid in the master cylinder.

He rode his bike up along the side of the car. I didn't see him coming. He asked me what I was doing.

He was a few inches from me, and with a smile, I told him that I didn't want either of us to get sick, and as nicely as I could, I asked him to please back away a bit.

He said "I can do whatever the fuck I want to".

Then he rode off.

I had no idea what to do. I just stood there dumbfounded with a can of brake fluid in my hand.

Just saw it the other day on social media. How did I get to this advanced age without knowing that

More important, how did I raise a child without knowing that?

Although, I do need to figure out how to get her to college in the fall...

His snottiness in the face of a genuine attempt to keep him safer without offending him told you everything you need to know about that kid. It also told us a lot about you, and unlike what that kid told us all, they're good things.

I think your image of him lounging on his front steps smoking a cigarette and bragging to his equally repellent little friends is spot on. Not a damned thing you can do about that.

However, we'll forgive you if the next time you see him, it's "Get the fuck away from me, you rotten little twerp!"

Really. Extra points for brake fluid on his sneakers.

and had to move twice because 2 young boys, around 5 or 6 were playing and kept running very close to me. The mother was standing away from us and watching them, but it wasn't until the second time I moved that she finally told them to play closer to her. There was plenty room for the kids to play away from the people trying to social distance. Non of them had masks on, we all did.

If i'm in the yard, they will run up to me "just to tell me something".

I normally don't wear a mask when I am in my yard, because there is usually no one around. But if they are playing outside, I put one on.

And they really don't understand .. a LOT. And this is precisely why every school teacher in the country is loudly proclaiming that any kind of airy-fairy planning about social distancing in the schools come next fall is .. a flat out JOKE.

Kids don't distance very well. In fact .. human beings don't distance .. at least not very well.

one day he was near the fence and 2 small boys on the other side were trying to get him to throw his pocket pens to them, that they wanted them for school. He told them politely that he couldn't do that. After a few more tries they gave up and yelled fuck you and fuck your mother too in broken english.

At an apartment complex in the nearby city doing landscaping. My first year, I think i was in 9th grade I was on trash pickup duty. This involved walking the complex carrying a 5 gallon bucket and a broom handle with a ground off nail in it to spear trash. The complex was large and built on the rolling hills of the city. So it wasn't the worst summer job. I will mention that the complex had a number of low income subsidized renters. I got in lots of exercise walking the hilly complex 8 hours a day, plenty of sun, and a bit of city education as I lived in a small town. One morning I was in the common area of one of the building clusters that needed some TLC. There were some young kids playing in the central area behind me. I was down on one knee cleaning out the bed in front of one the units and this sweet looking little girl that couldn't have been more the 5 or 6 came up to me a said "whatchya doing Mister" . I replied picking up trash. She repled "fu.ck you mister". I think my jaw must have dropped. I remember it to this day.
