Anybody who would put up with me for 46 years HAS to be someone extraordinary!

(54,338 posts)If she had gotten a closer look at me in the beginning, I doubt I would have gotten beyond "guten Abend."
Oh, and no offense taken. I wear glasses, and I see just fine!

(2,023 posts)At first I thought she was Stevie Nicks, but then I looked her up, and no, Stevie Nicks is 72 and her birthday is in May. So I have no idea who this woman is. Can't even venture another guess.
Incidentally, today is Carly Simon's birthday. She is 75 today. Happy birthday, Carly, and I feel much "Anticipation" for many more!

(54,338 posts)The woman is the one who I met 46 years ago in a smoky cabaret in what was then West Berlin, and for reasons I don't dare question too closely, decided to stay with me ever since.

(54,338 posts)One of the few times we couldn't celebrate together.
At 6 in the morning, she drove me to the train station, as I had to be in Paris at noon.
That went fine, and I got everything done. But the 5:25 PM train from Paris to Rotterdam was late, and I missed my connection to Utrecht. Then there was an accident on the tracks between Gouda and Utrecht, and we had to get off in Gouda. We had to wait 25 minutes there for a train to Utrecht, and it was delayed as well because only one track was open, and we had to wait for the train coming from the other direction before our train could continue.
When I finally got to Utrecht, it was about 10:00 PM, and then the hotel couldn't find my reservation. But in the age of Corona, NO hotel is full up, so they gave me a room. I called her again, and she said there was nothing but well-wishing from America and around Europe. A bunch of friends and neighbors came over, and kept her company. After my "gotta do" things here in Holland tomorrow, I'll be back in Germany in time for dinner. Almost back to my old routine, in other words, NOTHING is ever routine!

(54,338 posts)In a West Berlin cabaret in 1974, we were all sitting on benches watching the stage, a place I frequently had been performing from, myself. She had seen me play, but I didn't know that at the time. I was chatting to a girlfriend of hers who was sitting between us, and the place was so dark and cramped, you couldn't see who was sitting on the other side of the person next to you. The girlfriend mentioned that she was leaving for China the next morning, but that I should meet her girlfriend from the northwest (of Germany). I said sure, where is she? She said right here, and leaned back. You can imagine what my wife looked like at age 22. I was totally blown away, but figured a nerd like me had no chance with someone like that.
But then I realized--just in time--keep THAT attitude up, and you never WILL have a chance with someone like that. So, we started talking. She had never met an American who spoke German before, and (I found out later), I was the first guy who did not use the "hey, I play guitar" line on her, and she knew I really did. Nobody had informed me that it served as a pickup line (like I said: nerd).
She was from the rural flat farm country of Northwest Germany, a place I knew nothing about, and I was from the USA, a place she figured she would never visit. I had no idea what kind of pickup line would work on a woman like that, so I didn't even bother trying. THAT, on the other hand, was JUST what she had been looking for in a guy, and so we hit it off.
An American friend once warned me that German women looked fabulous until they got married. Well, now well into our sixties (we are the same age), I think she still looks fabulous. She was offered a few modeling jobs, and thought the job sounded ridiculous, and she became a social worker--a thankless, strenuous job she just wanted to do.
Smoking hot, I believe, was the expression used by a poster above. You'll get no argument from me. Not then. Not now. And she's STILL the woman I get along with better than anyone else I've ever met. For me, THAT'S smokin'!

(54,338 posts)But rules are made to be broken, and so far, we've both beaten the reaper twice.
My maternal grandfather sent out a Christmas card when he was 99. It had a photo of himself, looking very much his age, and he captioned it, "Compliments of the Seasoned."
Now, THOSE are genes I am proud to carry!
