Hey, it's Friday night, I'm in a (somewhat rare) fun mood, and I hope you are too!
For me, When Harry Met Sally was formulaic and predictable. The lady I saw it with agreed.
Pretty much everything by David Lynch, our most orrated director.
Fight Club. Even with the twist, it was a dumb movie.
The Usual Suspects. This film didn't even have a twist, as the situation was obvious less then 30 minutes in.
My favorite genre is horror, where there is no shortage of glorified dreck:
The Blair Witch Project, Paranormal Activity. Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz!
The Grudge Japanese woman does amazing crocodile impression!
Nightmare on Elm Street Franchise. Saw the first movie, learned Freddy was a child-molester, never saw another one!
THE SHINING: Absolutely, positively the most overrated movie of my lifetime! Stephen King's novel was fantastic Stanley Kubrick's mutilation of it was nothing short of reprehensible! Another "Great Director" from the same abusive mold of Hitchcock, Polanski, the aforementioned Lynch, and Allen. Just ask Shellry Duvall, if she can still speak!
And the number of WORDS WASTED, in books, film "documentaries," magazine articles and college theses trying to "analyze" this ultimate cinematic equivalent of The Emperor's New Clothes is APPALLING!
My personal analysis of The Shining is brief, concise, to the point:
It's a shit movie. Ignore it!
And absolutely, feel free to share your own examples, horror or non.

(16,410 posts)Didn't see it for years after it was such a big hit, then decided I should probably catch up with the pop culture attached to it.
Although it was mildly amusing, it was mostly stupid, and I couldn't see what everyone else was so agog about.

Everybody's entitled to their own opinions (for the time being); I thought "The English Patient" was a first-rate movie, based on an even better novel. Given the kind of shit flicks we're inundated with now---are you paying attention, "Joker" fans?---it looks even better in retrospect. But then, that's just my own opinion.

my dad had a pair of hand raised squirrels when he was a kid named mickey and nicky. rode around on his shoulders and inside his shirt. grew up hearing all kinds of stories about them.
he tried to get me a baby flying squirrel once.
and i always wanted a crow. used to love yelling back and forth w them w my older son when he was tiny. peek momhood.

(96,043 posts)The proliferation, the way when the season came it could barely be avoided, certainly sharpened my distaste.
I love crows. We used to have a good many near our place, and then there was some illness that swept the species here and they practically disappeared. We are beginning to see a few again. That is bird you can ask how your day will go, and get a reliable answer from, if you can only figure how to read it....

barely see crows, and still no blue jays anywhere around here.
used to have a regular murder of 20-30 of them that sat in an old cottonwood 2 doors down and sometimes in my ancient silver maple. had a few nest along the metra tracks north of here a couple years ago, but havent seen them since.
i really miss them.

I happened to see it with someone who reviewed movies for a living, so when I was asked what I thought, I hesitated to answer, but it turned out the reviewer agreed. (23,615 posts)It is a true story. Hoosiers is a microcosm of the fanaticism of Indiana High School Basketball.
Not sure anymore about Indiana, but in Kentucky all teams compete equally for the State Championship - no divisions by school size or anything. When it is Tournament time, it is basically a new season and everyone starts on the same page. KY has had some real shockers in the Sweet Sixteen.
They were still doing it this way in Indiana when the Hoosiers story took place.

At the time, I was teaching for LAUSD and at that time they had year round school. The friend I went with was also a teacher and we
were both off track so we went to a theatre in Westwood in the middle of the day and in the middle of the week. I remember this so clearly because Carl Reiner and his wife were at the same showing and it was kind of cool seeing them...

(19,284 posts)I recently made the mistake of watching Alien: Covenant. What a shitty movie. Who's bright idea was the bromance between the two smug snooty arrogant pretentious and oh-so-superior despicable English robots? If there's anything I can't stand, it's pretentious androids with conceited English accents and a superiority complex. It's the old "the butler is superior to the idiots he's butlering but he's also lamely devious" dodge. Then trying to be "really like intellectual" with broken threads of haughty philosophical krap tossed in to "elevate" the "concept." Rubbish
A cast full of I-don't-care-what-happens-to-any-of-these-people forgettables. I hated this movie before the opening credits were even finished. Avoid

Not too long ago, I ran across a website that listed the top ten most disgusting movies of all times, that were considered cult classics.
I've seen some really bad movies, and I figured this was just hype, but I was wrong.
I'm not even going to get into the description of most of them, except to say that I could almost stomach Cannibal Holocaust, until the end.
A judge even had to force the director to bring in one of the actresses just to make sure she was still alive!
One movie, though, really stood out, but I can't remember the name, except it had "Sun" in the title.
It was "allegedly" filmed while the Japanese did endurance experiments on the Chinese population during World War II.
It was the most disgusting thing that I've ever watched in my whole life, but I am not going to sully this board with any kind of description of what happened.
You can just use your imagination, but I'll bet you won't even come close...

In the science fiction world it's regarded as a classic, which I cannot understand at all.
The original short story by Arthur C. Clarke, "The Sentinel" is actually quite good and I'd recommend it to anyone.

(21,046 posts)No emotional connections between the characters. There were two young ladies who were quickly killed off. Nothing but violence and threats of violence. And the people that saw it the same time I did (young people) just couldn't understand why I got nothing out of it.
I saw the first version of the darker Batman, the one with Michael Keaton and Jack Nicholson and the toxic sludge. It had some humor in it and was OK. Later they just got more violent and weird and sick. No, I don't want to watch Heath Ledger acting like a sociopath, because I don't need to look at them on movie screens, I've seen a few in real life.
Adam West is the only true Batman.

The Dark Knight was boring and forgettable to me. The plot felt rushed and hurried, and half of the actors phoned it in. I think it got much of its acclaim from Heath Ledger's untimely death (who, for the record, was not one of the actors who phoned it in.)Goodfellas--Good writing, good acting, good directing. But zero likable or compelling characters. I absolutely hated every single one of them. Which you might say, well yeah--it's a mob movie. Which is true, but you could still make them interesting. The Godfather had interesting characters. The Sopranos had interesting characters. Goodfellas was simply the story of a wannabe mobster who got caught and turned informant not for any moral reasons, but just to save his own skin.
Ditto on another Scorcese project, The Wolf of Wall Street. Same thing--zero likable characters. Made worse by the fact that an unrepentant Jordan Belfort made a cameo in it.
Scorcese's a very talented director (see The Departed, The Last Temptation of Christ), but his "true crime" dramas leave me feeling cold.

(5,914 posts)I thought it was skeevy, pretentious garbage when it came out. It's a disgusting jerk-off fantasy for middle-aged incels. And that was long before we heard about Kevin Spacey's proclivities.
I absolutely fucking hate that movie.
