one of our cats was begging me for a taste of chili I was making. I put some aside in a bowl to cool and then gave it to her.

She looked at the chili.

She looked up at me.

She looked at the chili.

She looked up at me.

She looked at the chili.

Then she turned her back on the chili and went through the "bury what you just did" routine on the floor. My favorite, of all the culinary criticism I've had over the years.

She sniffed the canned food, then tried to bury it with the dry food. Funniest damn thing I ever saw her do.

Many years ago, I had a cat that gave birth to a very loud and extremely developmentally advanced orange kitten. (How "developmentally advanced"? The little shit managed to climb the blanket and get in bed with me before his eyes were open.)

When his little teeth had erupted, I thought it was time to try some wet food on him. (He hadn't been in a cat box yet.) I went to the best pet store in Fayetteville, NC, and bought three cans of the best wet kitten food they sold. It cost a lot of money per can. I opened a can, pulled some out, and put it on a nice little plate for him.

He took one sniff of the very first solid food he'd ever seen in his life. And then he buried it, walked over to his mother's plate, and chowed down.
