Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsWow! My neighbor has been power washing his playscape for four days!
And the noise is driving me nuts. He starts at around 10, takes a lunch break, then continues until 6 or 7 in the evening! And the thing is only about 10 feet long! Jesus H. Christ, give it a rest already! And his kids are grown up and don't even play on it anymore.

I moved from the 'burbs into a small city a few years ago, and thankfully the craze hasn't hit here yet.
But in my old neighborhood there were people who decided that they had to power wash their house and garage and anything else that would stand it each and every year.
These tended to be folks who had already passed through riding mowers, weed whackers and leaf blowers.
The noise was incredible, and was a major reason for my move.

(8,039 posts)I had neighbors who seemed perfectly content not ever power washing their house, who suddenly had the urge to do it at least once a year.
The thing is--it actually can damage your siding or shingles. Unless you have a real issue with mold or mildew or whatever, it's totally unnecessary and even counter productive.
It's like folks who suddenly overnight felt they had to use a leaf blower to blow the dirt off their driveways, and stores that use them now to blow dirt off their parking lots. How on earth did these United States survive all those decades without regularly swept parking lots?
It's like a toy is invented and marketed by some corporation, and suddenly it becomes an urgent need. What starts as a convenience becomes a necessity.
And I won't even go into all the associated health risks, or the contributions to climate change.
Take a step or two back, and it looks absolutely bonkers.

(38,958 posts)from the winter and the air pollution off of the siding and clean up the carport where we enjoy sitting on the cooler days when we can do so. The house looks much, much better when done, the area where we enjoy a bit of the outdoors watching the hummingbirds and grilling. I do it because I prefer clean over dirty.

But macro changes are not easy to accomplish and I would not complain about a once a year ritual cleansing done for the pleasure of watching birds.
Wish you happiness in that experience. I think I need to do more of it myself.Life is short and we must not deny ourselves these experiences

(38,958 posts)and I have had no complaints from the neighbors regarding noise issues. It takes me about 3-4 hours to accomplish the entire Spring cleaning with several breaks in the action as I have coffee or reposition the unit for the next area. I wish all of my neighbors would clean their houses, wash their windows, trim the shrubs, cut & trim the grass, clean the driveways and keep up their property doing so makes the entire neighborhood better for all.

Despite realty industry marketing we each only buy the property we paid for and not the neighborhood.
So I endure the noisers and get to tell the cleansers to mind their own business.

Steve Jobs was quite good at this, actually.
I bought an electric pressure washer two years ago and still haven't gotten around to using it. So I don't really get the attraction either.

(34,131 posts)Mostly I plan to use it to wash rugs. I have rubber backed scatter rugs that are machine washable - but my husband (who does the wash) keeps forgetting to turn the heat down when he washes them. This ruins the rubber, it peels off the back and clogs up the washer drain.
This light weight Ryobi power washer should work fine for washing the rugs. I figure we can wash the carport, power wash the dirt out of the rugs, scrub some soap into them, then power wash the soap out.
Maybe I'll even wash my own car every so often. I almost never wash any of our vehicles, even by taking them to the car wash, so this will be a novelty. The last two times we took our truck into the mechanic they washed it for us - they were embarrassed to have a yellowish green truck that was supposed to be white in their lot.

(31,929 posts)I get that greenish stuff that appears on the vinyl siding on the house and garage every year and its a real job washing it off by hand, getting up on a ladder, too.
But what your neighbor is doing is just plain nuts. He has nothing else better to do?

(8,039 posts)and there are places that will rent them for a day or two.
But the people I've seen using them don't have that issue. It's just the latest craze, or something.

So, what do you think he's trying to wash off of it? Evidence of a crime? Blood?
