The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsWhat are your parameters for "RECing" a post?
I see so many posts with high view numbers and barely any Rec's.
I wonder why?

(15,100 posts)It's also interesting to see posts with many viewings, lots of written responses, and few recs.
I'm guessing that folks just skip that part sometimes.

when a post is something I hope others will see which means it has value either as a point of political note/important news item; funny; I agree with the OP's point whether I post a comment or not.
Sometimes I'll comment on a comment but not the OP itself. Lots of K&Rs and +1s make up the bulk of my post count.

(54,770 posts)But, sometimes, I just forget to Rec even when I think it was an excellent post.
Tend to Rec when people are sick, grieving, need help or thoughts, etc., although I dont usually comment.
Not sure there is any etiquette for Recing, although Im going to read comments later to see if Ive missed something.
I wish there were more than just a thumbs up type Rec. Never feel right Recommending a post about say a great Democrat dying or something.

(70,691 posts)By claiming it here, my vast unpopularity will kill off the meme.
I Rec most of all by Democratic topic, originality, or hatred for wingnuts. More often than not, no additional comment is needed. Hence, the K&R gives thread recognition, visibility, validation.
When there are duplicate threads, I either Rec them all or Select which one to favor based on site behavior by the Poster.
I obviously don't read every thread or even every O.P. I get in trouble by skimming topics, with the Subject title often being enough. But for the topics that I actually *do* spend time reading, it's a matter of might as well Rec it, too.
I seldom Rec things in Lounge, so frivolous doncherkno?!1

(9,761 posts)I never think of a rec helping a post get to the greatest page. I rec most posts I read unless they are spam or I think they are harmful because I feel like by reccing I am saying thank you to the person who posted and giving them some encouragement. Because it takes courage to make an original post. What I hope to say with a rec is, I am glad you are here and I appreciate you. I am grateful to be able to read what you have posted.
Im probably doing it all wrong.

(28,817 posts)So sometimes if Im just breezing through Ill rec someone I know I agree with and like. I use it like a bookmark. I can find it later to read more.
Then for all the other reasons. Mostly I like upbeat posts. I dislike fear mongering posts.

(28,473 posts)So I don't usually rec a thread to get it on the GP, it's already there. I rec things that I agree with, and also like to give recs to the interesting news posts in the smaller forums to get them more visibility. Very rarely rec a twitter post, rarely rec anything that I feel is the left version of a dog whistle (posts about Trump's looks/weight, political gossip or conjecture, etc.).
