The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsI just watched Hamilton!!!
The diversity of the cast was marvelous, esp. given the story line of the birth of our nation.
Superb music/singing, excellent stage production.
I strongly urge folks to see it.

(17,616 posts)....so I will watch it again and this time I wont be distracted by the closed caption and I can pay more attn to the dancing and costumes. I am glad I didnt pay the 200$ for the ticket as I would have been asking hubby 'what did they say?' throughout.

(21,304 posts)I doubt that Trumpers would understand the message. I think my daughter told me that the actor who played Hamilton wrote it.
That is Lin Manuel Miranda. Brilliant feat to write story, music and star in the show.

(1,865 posts)He is one of the ones that really stood out compared to what was in the cast recording. He and Daveed Digs (Jefferson/Lafayette) really lit up the stage with personality.
They are all great but those are the two that just jumped off the screen to me.

(1,865 posts)When Jefferson sauntered onto the stage the first time, flipping hilarious.
The entire cast - incredible talent.

(34,105 posts)He played the roll of Kristoff in Frozen, was part of the serial Looking and was on Glee for a while and more I am sure I do not know.
I got to meet him and the rest of the cast of Spring Awakening. They were all very nice but he and John Gallagher Jr. were so talkative and kind.
I don't have Disney so will not be seeing this for awhile but we have done parts of in in pops concerts and I really love the music.
He is good in Mindhunter isn't he. I hear there is another season coming. I hope so!

(34,105 posts)but they were waiting on Groff's schedule to clear. I must have read that wrong. Thanks!

(115,674 posts)and probably won't - I just don't like pop-musical theater, even if it's well done.

(47,549 posts)You should at least check out about twenty minutes of it, like I did, if only to marvel at the sheer brilliance of the choreography on the motorized stage. Dancing, spinning, walking, or just standing still. Everything was about hitting your mark. Really quite impressive.
The Velveteen Ocelot
(115,674 posts)but I really don't like musicals. The last one I saw was "Hair" on Broadway in 1969, which was fun but definitely not typical.

(47,549 posts)Which is why I only stuck around for twenty minutes. 😉

(25,848 posts)I keep having a sneaking suspicion that it is over-hyped. I'm okay with musical theater, but I long ago learned to be wary of something "everybody" loves.
I notice it most in novels that become runaway best sellers. All of the people who only read one book a year will glom onto the one that "everyone" says is wonderful, and because they read so little, their standards are relatively low. So, those books I will generally stay away from.
Movies are different, since lots of people go to movies far more often, so the "everyone loves it!" meme isn't as often applied to a piece of crap. Although there are some movie genres, for instance superhero movies that do nothing for me, so I simply don't bother with them.
Maybe I will eventually get around to Hamilton. Hard to say.

(16,334 posts)I'm not interested enough to pay to have Disney plus just to see it. And I was never one who could fathom paying hundreds of dollars to see it live on stage.
I love theater and some musicals but I hated LalaLand which most of the rest of the world loved. Glad I saw it for free!

(25,848 posts)I know that you can stream some brand new movies for something like $20.00, which is a bargain for a couple or a family. But I live alone, so no thank you.
I have Hulu, Amazon Prime, and Netflix, and while it's sometimes annoying that I can't see some specific movie or show on one of those, I'm only willing to pay so much for the entertainment.
I don't happen to own a regular TV, but I watch a reasonable share of TV over the internet.

(10,014 posts)Some things (books, plays, music, etc) transend their genre. Hamilton reimagines history in an innovative and energizing way.
I'm not a big fan of musical theatre and hated Rent, Les Mis, and Cats. But Cabaret, the Music Man, and Hamilton are works of pure genius and deserve all the accolades they receive. I'm sorry you'll miss seeing it.
The Velveteen Ocelot
(115,674 posts)I think the reason I don't like musicals is at least partly the singing style - all chest voice and shouty. And with a few exceptions like West Side Story, a lot of the music is pretty forgettable. I even quit a choir once because the director was programming too many show tunes, just couldn't stand 'em. I will probably see Hamilton when it turns up on some streaming service for free because of all the hype, but I bet it won't be even close to the Met's recent production of Handel's Agrippina. That was the ultimate musical theatre, high art and sheer genius.
