(38,601 posts)Am I missing out?
lillypaddle
(9,580 posts)Just try one of the little jars of herring in white wine sauce (not the sour cream). No bones, no heads, no tails, just little pieces of herring pickled. Quite good. And onions are in the jar, too.

Well, and since we're talking about it, maybe a Johnsonville brat with horseradish and hot mustard (or sauerkraut) on the side.
Nothing fancy. Just outta the jar and then make it your own.
lillypaddle
(9,580 posts)if you've never had them. Usually they are in the canned fish/meat section. Just stick 'em on a cracker, and have a nice cold beer with them. Or if you're like me, a nice shot of tequila!

(38,601 posts)Are they fishy as kippers?
lillypaddle
(9,580 posts)Kippers are smoked, but I don't think they are particularly salty. No, the pickled herring aren't salty.
OMG now you've got me going - damn, I LOVE anchovies (on a saltine), too. I'm sure they aren't good for my high blood pressure, but occasionally I splurge on my health. Love the anchovy paste, too. I intend to make a nice Caesar dressing one day very soon; Romaine, shaved parmesan, and homemade Caesar dressing. Croutons. Chicken.
I am so sorry for hijacking this thread. Maybe we should take it to email?

lillypaddle
(9,580 posts)But crackers are always a good side with smoked and pickled fish - I like just plain ol' Saltines. And cheese, like Limburger and Gorgonzola, and even a good smoked Gouda. I am sure there are others.
And then there's pump and crusty crisp rolls. In Germany, they just make buttered boiled potatoes and eat those with the herring. Or they did when I was there years ago. And my Mother was a war bride from Germany, so that's how I got introduced to this deliciousness.

Many years ago I worked in a gourmet restaurant. When I started working there, I have to admit my favorite meal was a hamburger. It still is.
It took the owners a long time to get me to eat more adventurous foods. I always refused to eat the liver. One day, one of my bosses, someone who became a dear friend, begged and begged me to try one bite of liver. I didn't want it, but I finally gave in.
I ended up chasing him through the building because I wanted to punish him for making me eat that!
Good memories of working there.
BAD memories of liver!

(115,674 posts)And yes, liver is heinous. It smells like pee so I won't even try to eat it.

(14,886 posts)durian because I read a Nat Geo article about over 45 yes ago!
There was a quote like "it's like eating the most wonderful dessert in the world in the middle of a Garbage dump" .
Told stories of people trying to sneak it into hotels, on planes, etc and getting busted! Families sort of broken up between those who loved it, and those who hated it!.
Just a few years later as a graphics designer I was holed up at a client's house because while heading there I sprained my ankle. I spent a lot of time talking to his wife whom I'd chatted with off and on at concerts where we'd run into each other.
When she told me about living in Malaysia for a time because her dad was in the Foreign Service; a bell went off inside me. I asked, "do you know about the durian?"
She got all misty-eyed. "Ahhh, the durian... ", she sighed.
We ended up being friends for many years. 💖

A friend of mine came back from a trip to somewhere out there with durian hard candy. Even in candy form we made him stop opening them at work. it was worse than the time a guy in high school wanted to see what pepper spray smelled like. IN English class.
