Notified of work vac leave changes due to Covid (good news, I think)

Hadn't given it any thought that they'd actually change this, but my dept at work just sent out notice that they are going to bypass the vacation accrual maximums with the caveat that accrued vacation days over max will need to be used before January 2022. I'm figuring it's to 'ease the pain' of almost no raises this year. So far, they're still planning on bringing thousands of students back to on campus classes for fall semester, nearly doubling our town's regular population.

I'm thinking that the accrued vacation probably will be difficult to schedule if you actually want to take time off. I'm OK with taking long weekends for a year.

Has anybody else's workplace adapted their vacation/sick policy over this?

The company (whose initials you would recognize) is shutting down for a week in August, which makes me sad (no $$) but on the other hand, I REALLY need a break. I thought at first it might be to clean the bejeezus out of the offices before they march people back to Cubeville, but definitely not in my hotspot state. Maybe just a cost-saving measure; they rely heavily on contractors. And theoretically we're just glad to still have a job.
