How hard is it to take a document out of a file in Microsoft Word and put it into Google edit?

My daughter says I should be doing the book I am writing on Google edit. It is currently in Microsoft Word. I tried to start it but already am in trouble.

Is this easy? Can she just walk me through by phone? Do I just basically cut and past? And do I just give a link to the picture where I want it to appear in the text?

I know nothing about Google Edit.

Snip

I've often written my first pass of a document on in Word where I'm less distracted, and then uploaded it to Google to better collaborate with others. This feature is also useful if you no longer want to use Word, and have a library of old .doc or .docx files you want to keep using.

Doing this involves three basic actions:

Select File Upload in Google docs.
Choose your Word doc.
Open it in Google Drive (if you want to edit).

Within the documents are photos (not just links to photos). I am assuming that in Google edit I'll need to put the links back in.

Great way for multiple people to access the same document. It’s stored in your google account instead of the hard drive on your lap top so you can access anywhere. If none of that matters, stick with word but make sure you have current backups. I e-mail myself files I never want to lose.

correctly. There’s a little bit of a learning curve but I think the advantage of only having one copy of a doc makes it worth it. No more e-mailing sections and copy/paste them into the, hopefully, correct version of the doc.

She has an excellent design sense, which I don't have. I am in awe of her capabilities and talents!
