He'd lay flat out in the yard as if he were passed out or dead. The mockingbirds would do fly by pecks him for a while, then they'd get bold, land, and hop around hassling him. When they got very relaxed, the cat would leap up and try to grab them. He only ever got feathers, but it scared the birds enough they would leave him alone for a while. Smart old cat.

I know my cats fake me out and then "attack." I pretend they are playing while I apply the bandaids.

Had been beaten up a bunch and his head was covered in scars. He showed up at our house one day, curled up with our beagle (who was a rescue from a garage Dad used). Mom took him in for a checkup, got him neutered and vaccinated, and he stuck around for about five years before he died of old age. The vet said he probably just wanted a good retirement home and knew we were suckers. He hung around with the beagle the whole time he lived at my parents' house - but never went inside.

My dog was found out in the woods where Dad was prospecting. The beagle had gotten dumped at the garage by some RV people after their RV was repaired there. My oldest sister's Siamese was adopted after he turned out to be a terrible match with a family that had small kids. We had a pair of chinchillas that failed as money makers for a rabbit breeder.

The only pets we had that were purchased were some chicks - my sisters picked dyed Easter chicks. I didn't like the colors so I picked a little reddish buff colored chick. We had to keep my chick separate from the others because they picked on it. It turned out when they got big that the dyed chicks were Leghorns and my little buff chick was a Rhode Island Red.

Eventually Mom sent the chickens to "live on a farm" but we had fresh chicken in the freezer that week...

I have 3 cats. Two males lived next door until they got an insane purebred German Shepherd. They moved under my deck and into my house when it got cold. The female belonged to the neighbors behind me. She was not allowed inside and she didn't like dogs or children- they had both. She lived on my deck until there was a massive rain storm and she hovered under a lawn chair with rain dripping on her. She went inside too. She has a crush on one of the males.

Here's the weird part. The previous owners of the female told me she would leave for months at a time - obviously looking for a new home. I had seen her a few times but she ran when I got near. The cat I had died and it was soon after she came into my yard, jumped on my lap and wouldn't leave. They know stuff!

We (my husband and I) even had dogs and cats found on the side of the road.

Once on the way home from a horse show, I had to stop on a four lane highway to not hit a puppy that was eating road kill. I picked him up, took him home and he was the best dog I ever had for seventeen years.

Being on a farm, people would dump animals on the road in front of our place. We found a litter of kittens, very tiny, in the ditch out front, and raised them until we found homes for all but one. That little kitty was so small we didn't think she was old enough to spay until she had one calico kitty. Mother died of a heart defect at only seven, the calico lived with us until she was almost eighteen.

One cat we adopted as a kitten, was found at the accident site where a friend totaled his car. This tiny kitten jumped into our truck as we were looking the location over. As I cuddled it, we could see a Mama cat with some more kittens hiding in the bushes. Even though we tried to coax them closer, none of the rest of the litter or the mother cat would come out. We decided that the Mama cat figured one kitten per vehicle was enough!

There are many other stories from the last forty plus years of cats and dogs we acquired by finding them. But they know who they can trust.
