We have tried all the tricks suggested on line. Older cat continues to growl if the kitten gets within five feet and will swat at it if the baby gets too close.

(86,330 posts)It takes time for the older cat to accept the presence of the kitten, depends on the older cat. If you let them gradually encounter each other, they will eventually come to some kind of truce and sometimes as friends.

(16,993 posts)the little one understands whos in charge. Worst case scenario the little one gets pinned and learns to leave the older one alone. You may be surprised. My 15 year old kitty became best friends with a 6 month old rescue I brought home. First friend he ever had.

(12,409 posts)Our older fella limps around with a past injury to a rear leg so he was not pleased. The kitten persisted and now after a year they are constant companions. Best thing that happened to the old tom.

(3,577 posts)We found a 2-week-old kitten who had been abandoned by her mother. While she was being bottle fed, we kept her in one of the bathrooms and away from the older cat. He could smell and hear her and was of course curious. After a few weeks we brought her into the living room in a carrier and let him see her. After a few of those meetings we tried letting her out with him and they were friends forever.

(12,409 posts)loved to run up behind his elder, named Butters, and easily knock him over due to his bad rear leg/hip issue. Butters would then grab Itty, knock him down, pounce on him, and gnaw at his neck. Playfully. Itty has grown, weighs more, is quite a bit stronger & nimble, yet still respects Butters' as alpha cat in a very loving manner.

(22,005 posts)Its has a natural calming effect. Available online, or herbal stores. Maybe make him more tolerant of the young'un. I never had much luck with the Feliway products, but that may be worth a shot too.

I thought the side-effects were just too dangerous. Any more, and I'd start appreciating Trump's empathy.

(44,972 posts)As long as it's not attacking the baby cat. I don't have suggestions. When I brought the second younger cat home, older cat growled but only for couple days. Then they just worked it out between themselves. I didn't do any kind of tricks to get them to get along.

(2,944 posts)sleeping as we also have 2 large dogs they're weary about. During the day while we're up and around it's hissing at the dogs. At night, however, they come downstairs where the dogs are able to roam and act like best buds. Just saying: maybe they're looking for attention?
