(6,112 posts)When we were first married, many moons ago, I told him that I wanted to get a cat. He was really upset about it and told me "I hate cats. I won't touch it, I won't hold it, I won't feed it. Keep it away from me." That afternoon, I went to the animal shelter and came home with a kitten. My husband was napping when I returned, so I put the kitten on his chest. When he woke up and saw her, it was all over. He became an ardent cat dad.

(6,917 posts)I say the same thing until a volunteer shows up at the doorstep needing shelter. Now that I think about it, the last cat we now have forced his way through the pet door one freezing night and made himself right at home on the couch.
Its his house now.

(2,116 posts)Dad never got along with our first cat, Boots. She was a dignified cat, and Dad had no patience for that. Dad was a dog person. He never forgave Boots for not having a sense Whose is he?"
of humor, and she never forgave him for expecting her to have one. Mom placated him by saying that cats don't live long and after she died we could get a dog. Boots lived with us for 18 years.
The family was petless for a few years until my younger brother went to visit our sister at college. When he returned he had a kitten in his arms.
Mother: "How cute!
Brother: "Ours."
Dad: 'Oh God!"
The first night in our home the kitten was racing around, exploring his surroundings. Eventually he climbed to the top of the easy chair where Dad was sitting and settled down to observe his new family. Dad was sitting there enjoying his Manhattan and stroking his bushy moustache, as he was wont to do. After watching this for a while the kitten reached over with his paw and stroked the other side of Dad's moustache. We all held our breaths, not know how Dad would react. He didn't.
The next morning Mom came into the kitchen to find Dad trying to make breakfast while holding the kitten in one hand. "It's hard to cook oatmeal one handed", he said.
Later that day we were sitting around watching the kitten's antics when Dad quoted Shakespeare, "Yon Cassius has a llean and hungry look." Dad and Cassius remained fast friends for the rest of their lives together.

(9,426 posts)Thanks for posting these. God made animals cute so they could make humans love them. Easy to do, too. I love the way these cats look as if to say "What? What do YOU want?"

(60,010 posts)Had to foist cat on # 1 son, who was in his early 20's.
Didn't want a cat, any cat,etc.
i had to play the Mommy card.
Jasper was a very special kitty. My kid would keep me informed of cat news, send pics, etc.
Grown son, right? 10 years later he called me crying, Rainbow Bridge time.
He's crying, so I am crying, etc.
Both cat averse sons now have cats.

(1,110 posts)She didn't work in a residential area, so she thought the kitten would not be safe on the streets, so she took it home. Her husband declared they didn't need a cat, and told her to take it to the shelter. She agreed that she would after work the next day.
However, when she came home from work the next day and said she was taking the cat to the shelter, her husband, said, "No I love her!"
And they lived happily ever after!

(205,320 posts)As a kid, we had goldfish, tadpoles that grew into frogs and one very special turtle rescued from a mountain road. I desperately wanted a cat, but when I got a little older we got a cocker spaniel puppy, the kind of dog my Dad grew up with. I've subsequently adopted 3 more senior cockers, not to mention 3 rescue terriers and 4 cats over the years. And the pups that knew my Dad always loved him the best. And when I brought home my pet rat from a college Psych course, my Dad liked and accepted him, too.
