condensers. It’s under 10 years old but a crappy unit. The repair shop said they don’t install them due to that problem.

Seriously, yes odd things happen at night. My smoke detectors' batteries always seem to wear out in the dead of night. So I'm woken up by the irritating beeping and the only way to stop it is to get up, get a ladder or step stool depending on where it is and pulling the battery.

They must be programmed that way.

Half asleep, you ignore them for an hour, then you get angry and pull out the battery, and then you can't get back to sleep.

I was once staying in a motel where the smoke alarm started making this weird intermittent high pitched squeal which woke me up. I was in a bad mood that night (I don't remember why) so I pulled it off the wall, opened the balcony door and threw it onto the roof of the supermarket next door. Problem solved.

I'm slowly replacing the smoke alarms in our house with the new sort that have a ten year battery. I write the date on them with a big black Sharpie marker so I can replace them in ten years before they start chirping.
