(23,568 posts)I've seen plenty of homeless people in my life. But this guy look like a kid.
I just can't understand how this could happen in our country so wealthy as ours.

(9,696 posts)Where I live we had a homeless man living at a bus stop for about a week. Most the neighbors were watching out for him. Finally one day the PD came and basically sent him walking down the street because if he were to cross the street he'd be in another city. So that was all the help he got from my fair city.

(43,530 posts)That's what living in this sick American society does to those of us who are empathetic. The low level of social services that are offered is part of what causes it.
I've experienced it myself and there are days when I relive that experience over and over.
A few weeks ago a caller to my local NPR broke down in tears on her call. The call was to ask a city representative from Housing (she was being interviewed on the show) if what she experienced in helping a homeless woman was representative of what NYC did for homeless people.
This woman, too, was traumatized.
Meanwhile, we have plenty of money to give tax breaks to billionaires and not a dent in the Defense budget was made on the last go-around.

Kick in to the DU tip jar?
This week we're running a special pop-up mini fund drive. From Monday through Friday we're going ad-free for all registered members, and we're asking you to kick in to the DU tip jar to support the site and keep us financially healthy.
As a bonus, making a contribution will allow you to leave kudos for another DU member, and at the end of the week we'll recognize the DUers who you think make this community great.
