The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsHello everyone
So happy to be here!
So happy about the Biden/Harris ticket.
About myself: am definitely an introvert, love gardening, enjoy reading mystery novels and watching old episodes of Midsomer Murders, retired, live with husband, adult daughter, three dogs and a very old, cranky cat. My major childhood influences were probably Mad Magazine, DC comics, and the Three Stooges. Slightly eccentric. English major, terrible at math. I like mint chocolate chip ice cream.
My favorite topic sections of DU are science and anthropology.
Almost forgot to mention, the Wicked part of my screen name comes from visiting Maine, where people who think something is great say it is wicked good. And the Blue is for Democrats, and also my favorite color.
I keep editing this to explain about "wicked good"

(9,729 posts)I share your love of gardening, mystery novels, and Mad Magazine. Until I was 14 or so, I had an enormous collection of DC Comics in pristine condition. If I hadn't had nieces and nephews, I'd be a wealthy man today. I'm also an introvert, bit of a loner, and an old bachelor. I think you'll love being at DU, and we'll love having you.
Wicked Blue
(5,832 posts)Thank you!
My brother and I were big fans of comics and Mad. My mother detested them but my father figured that they would encourage us to read for enjoyment.
Alas, whenever we were packed off to church camp for a week, she would find our stashes and throw them out. One time she tried to bury them, but we located the grave and dug them up. Our comics never stayed pristine because we lent them to friends and neighbors.

(5,832 posts)Does anyone here remember Soupy Sales?
rurallib
(62,411 posts)Soupy was (supposedly) teaching White Fang to spell. He kept pointing to the letter "F" and Fang kept saying "K" until he (supposedly) said, "How come every time I say "F" you see "K"?
That Soupy Sales?
Wicked Blue
(5,832 posts)Yes, that Soupy.
and you've probably heard the one where he told kids to raid their parents' wallets and mail the green paper to him. Didn't see that show either.
In junior high we all raced home from school to watch Soupy.
He had a really funny show on Saturdays, I think it was called the Adventures of Detective Philo Kvetch or something like that. There were villains called The Mask and Onions Oregano, and a giant gorilla who chased everyone.

And have you ever noticed that the violent death rate in certain quaint English villages seems to be worse than that of Fallujah, and that most of the people who live there have at least one insane and/or homicidal relative?

(1,336 posts)And about your name: my Michigan niece, whose daughter has just entered first year Medical School, describes her as wicked smart.
I think the wicked adjective is now in cahoots with "sick" to describe something pretty amazing!
Well, they say English is a living language.......
Wicked Blue
(5,832 posts)That's very interesting. I didn't know the adjective wicked was outside New England. It's incredible how much you can learn on DU.
