He has been calling the store and telling them to get me an assortment of different beers. They are having a blast hooking old mom up and it has been a fun experience. I have learned I like the porters best. Hands down, but the really quality beers are fun to experience. So though I have been with you for decades, my son got me outside my box experiencing new, and I am really enjoying it.

Fewer hops means less bitter.

Porters are often that way, with most of the flavor coming from the barley that was roasted.

My favorite style is the Belgian Tripel, with most of the flavor coming from the yeast.

I used to home-brew some excellent Hefeweizens. They should be drank when fresh because they're wheat-based with few hops, and they can go "stale" faster than many other styles, but it's another example of a great yeast-flavored beer.

Anyway, it was the home-brewing hobby that helped me realize the huge variety of beer styles around the world.

I'm not a big fan of most American microbreweries, though. So many of their beers are super-hoppy and bitter! The Northwestern USA provides excellent growing conditions for hops, and it's like the attitude of our microbreweries is, "Use 'em since we got 'em!"

tend more toward the bitter, the porter, the IPA. I really dislike any of the sour. Not a fan of sour. One had me puckering so, I really did not enjoy. Same with the ciders, too sour.

I enjoyed the Bavarian lager. Very smooth.

The porter that was the best was a dark chocolate, follow thru flavor that was grand.

IPA = India Pale Ale. It was created by Brits to help the beer from turning bad during long sailing trips to their colonists in India, since hops act as a preservative with anti-bacterial properties. (Definitely more important in the old days when extreme sanitation was harder to achieve.)

I'm not a fan of the sour styles either!

Some of the styles that I mentioned earlier, with yeast-dominated flavors, are very complex. They can taste fruity in a subdued way, so they're unlike the intentionally fruit-flavored styles. It was interesting to me how each drink could seem unique sometimes -- like apricots with one swallow, oranges the next, peppery the next, etc.

Hefeweizens usually have an undercurrent of banana flavor that I liked, but not strong like banana bread or whatever. And it was another style that had other flavors in the background.

... to emulate it when I home-brewed. I quit doing it a few years ago, after gaining several pounds from drinking most of my batches! Lol. I might get back into it someday since I still have the equipment.

I even bought a mini-freezer controlled by a separate thermostat to try to ferment the Tripel properly, but I never quite got it right! I'd often submit my beers into competitions, and my Tripels usually fared the worst. Often won medals for my Hefeweizens, timing them to be ready shortly before the judging so they'd be fresh.

The mini-freezer was essential for the lagers that I made since they're cold-fermented. I usually didn't make lagers, though. They take much more time to ferment and I'm a big fan of yeast flavors (which lagers lack).

... the depressant effects of the alcohol. It didn't always happen, but I've had some very depressed episodes from drinking alcohol. Not to mention not thinking clearly in general when overdoing it.

It always starts as a relaxed and happy feeling for me initially, so why stop drinking there? Then later came the feelings of gloom and doom! Lol.

I'm just thankful that I never became addicted -- e.g., often thinking about it while not drinking, etc.

... I definitely have a problem overdoing alcohol consumption sometimes.

I was often the "life of the party" when the alcohol helped me to relax socially, but it was hard for me to judge when to stop after each drink seemed to increase the good feelings... until it didn't! Lol!

Oh, and some of the hangovers. Ugh! I couldn't even stand the idea of drinking alcohol again after some of those!

I'd imagine goat pee mixed with dishwater to taste (that would be Bud Light, a staple of college parties). A little taste on a hot day, if the beer is not Bud light and is very cold, is ok if nothing else is available, but I'd much rather have a nice gin & tonic.

IPA's are pretty popular though so if that's what you've been trying that's why you don't like that lol.

Look for a nice chocolate stout or an oatmeal stout made by most any craft brewery. Deeee-licious!

But a gin and tonic is pretty nice too. My wife likes me to make her a white Russian every now and again. I don't mind because I make me two too. If I'm unpacking the groceries and see a carton of half and half I know what's up.

Not bitter or light, usually high ABV, rich flavors

But at a family cookout my nephew was handing out ice cold beers to the adults and there I was drinking in beer and actually enjoying the taste.

I know your taste can change and there are many foods that I've either stopped liking, or developed a new affinity for. I guess beer is one of those things, and I'm sticking to one brand, Modelo, which is what by nephew was serving that started this. Its not that I'm suddenly guzzling down cases of beer, but I do like a cold glass with burgers, hot links and pizza.

I used to drink scotch, but the price went up and "The scotch I like I can't afford, and the scotch I can afford I don't like." Never drink anything you don't like. But remember, the mass market adjunct pale lagers are not the beginning and end of beer. Try a CDA, or a saison, or a regional stout, and you might change your mind.
