(17,148 posts)I'm sitting cross-legged in my computer chair with the five-string in my lap, trying to perfect the fingering of cripple creek.
Sometimes I tune it like a tenor banjo, or play irish folk. It's fucking great what you can get up to when you're retired. MALARKEY!.
How are you going sis? Hope the virus and bad weather passed you by.

(171,049 posts)I'm so unmotivated; into our 7th month of isolation. I fear I'm becoming a hermit; way too dumb peoply out there for me.
Otherwise, pretty good. I did do one thing; developed cataracts! So I'm going blind to boot! I have first surgery scheduled for the 14th and can't wait.
My sister got the covid but is now ok; we have escaped it and are extremely cautious when we go out infrequently.
Hotter than hell here, 2 potential big storms out there that I can see, so we're watching them.
How is it there? Are you experiencing waves of dumb people and spikes? Rachel scared me this week, showing the holidays and spikes, and the potential for disaster this weekend coupled with school openings. I am required to be a hermit for the forseeable future.

(17,148 posts)Then it escaped the hotel-quarantined returning travellers and we had a scary second wave. Currently Melbourne metro had curfew, no travel more than 5km radius from home. Masks compulsory.
Slightly relaxed restrictions in country areas with few cases. No curfew, masks compulsory. We're surviving OK here in the sticks.
There have been dickheads holding rallies in Melb. Freedom and all that. Many were arrested. Local paper made a point of saying nearly all protesters were young to middle-aged males and they were angry. Conspiracy nutters. Deep state, hoax etc
The premier just released plan to end lockdown. The nutters are not going to be happy - no changes for two weeks at least.
I have NOAA up; one near Malaise, one near you. Fingers crossed they die out.
We're all trying hard to be glass-half-full.

(7,627 posts)I have a Fairbanks special no 0 from 1895. Completely restaured. I got it from elderly instruments. I play (not very often anymore) clawhammer style.

(15,800 posts)Long years ago. Bought a banjo to go with my 6- and 12-string guitars. Turned out to be more of a learning curve than I could handle. In hindsight, I should have gotten a tenor banjo; but my innate stubborness insisted that I could do this. At the end of a year I'd learned one whole song. And adding to my aggravation, when I'd get frustrated and go back to the guitar, I'd play banjo chords. So, I sold the thing, promising myself that I'd try again some year. And this might be that year. I've been casually shopping for a tenor banjo, keeping an eye on craigslist and local markets. What the hey, it's an older apartment complex, acoustics aren't bad (although there is a prohibition in the lease against band instruments -- I'd love to know the story behind THAT). One thing I do remember -- it's hard to play a sad song on a banjo. Keep on pluckin'!
