I first heard her some 5 years ago on Prairie Home Companion. Out of the blue, that show bowled me over - I think she performed "Snowcone" as one of the sets and by the next day I had a new CD of hers in hand.

Probably one of the most under-rated female singer/songwriters ever.

(She does write some pretty depressing stuff though. )
