Conspiracy Theorists Have a Fundamental Cognitive Problem, Say Scientists.

The world’s a scary, unpredictable place, and that makes your brain mad. As a predictive organ, the brain is on the constant lookout for patterns that both explain the world and help you thrive in it. That ability helps humans make sense of the world. For example, you probably understand by now that if you see red, that means that you should be on the lookout for danger.

But as scientists report in a 2017 paper published in the European Journal of Social Psychology, sometimes people sense danger even when there is no pattern to recognize — and so their brains create their own. This phenomenon, called illusory pattern perception, they write, is what drives people who believe in conspiracy theories, like climate change deniers, 9/11 truthers, and “Pizzagate” believers.

The study is especially timely; recent polls suggest that nearly 50 percent of ordinary, non-pathological Americans believe in at least one conspiracy theory.

Illusory pattern perception — the act of seeking patterns that aren’t there — has been linked to belief in conspiracy theories before, but that assumption has never really been supported with empirical evidence. The British and Dutch scientists behind the new study are some of the first to show that this explanation is, in fact, correct.

The researchers came to this conclusion after conducting five studies on 264 Americans who focused on the relationship between irrational beliefs and illusory pattern perception. Initial studies revealed that the compulsion to find patterns in an observable situation was in fact correlated with irrational beliefs: People who saw patterns in random coin tosses and chaotic, abstract paintings were more likely to believe in conspiratorial and supernatural theories.

Some people are always look for something to fear, even if they have to make it up.

...I'm 100% sure that several people would claim the article is a conspiracy to hide the truth about conspiracies.

As entertaining as that would be, I'm kinda not in the mood. The chemtrails have really aggravated my allergies today. That combined with the headache from the fluoride in the water is making me cranky.

The conspirasy theories
And the resulting psychosis years ago.

Critical thinking and admitting to the hardship and distress it caused is exactly what made it go away.
I have very high levels of pattern recognition
according to tests I was given.

Nowadays knowing that I seperate reality based stuff from
Conspirasy stuff in my mind deliberately.

I can indulge in conspirasy
Than chuck it all out when I need to think .

There is part of me that enjoys going down the rabbit holes. I just decide beforehand I won't call it reality or truth.

And the other part knows exactly how dangerous believing in conspirasy theories as if they are true will wreck havok on my life,my mind and relationships. The trauma it causes, and the psychotic situations it creates .

I keep the crazy magical thinking stuff seperated from real life deliberately
by choice.. I basically hold two perceptions in my head at once, and choose to take significance away from one of them, the magical thinking part because if gone too far will cause me distress. And I will have flashbacks of the awful times I thought conspirasy and magical thinking was reality. I have a switch in my mind because I was traumatized by conspirasy shit that enables me to cut off the bullshit if it goes too far in appearing real.

I hope this makes sense.

Not to worry. I only wish it made sense to those who follow Humpty Trumpty around like little lost puppies. The world must be a terrifying place to them. I guess that's why they'd all like to return to the 1950s, when everything was so black and white.

Can make the world feel unsafe.
I never feel safe in this world. And I have no fondness for the mindless cruelty of nature
And reality.

But at least I am aware of why I feel this way. Was traumatized for years with a dysfunctional family, school, town. Dysfuctioning neighbors..
Later on traumatized in the hospital, residential programs. I am still trying to recover.

Gotta wonder how many kids get traumatized by dark triad parents? How people get thier vilagence switches stuck in the on position?

How many among the ignorant authoritarians and narcissists and psychopaths that worship trump.

... and it resurfaces later in twisted ways.

If parents and teachers are afraid to answer questions honestly society turns to shit.

Anti-intellectual religions and ideologies are extremely damaging.
