I'm looking at the will of an ancestor.
The value of his property is noted at 584 pounds in 1758 (including a lot of land in Hartford and environs that would be astronomical now, but we'll set that real estate valuation aside).

(25,848 posts)I will give you the pleasure of typing in the 584, and changing the year to 1758.
Now, take that number and enter it here:

I honestly think that the inflation rate is somewhat overdone, but I'm not any kind of expert on what money bought 250 years ago.

(20,491 posts)because I believe the pound sterling was at that time based on a pound of silver...about $205,000.
Now I will await ridicule for making assumptions.

(28,941 posts)Mid 18th century, a 100 pounds would equal 20,225 pounds today.
At that time the land would be worth about 117,000 pounds
Today one pound equals $1.27US. That converts to $128,000US
Someone with better math skills than mine can give you an exact figure.

(16,254 posts)My grandson sent me some information today on our ancestors (which we are tracking) and there were all kinds of dollar figures on land and other items. We'll have to try to calculate by the info you got.
Couldn't have been timed more perfectly.
P.S. One woman willed her clothes to all her female relatives. Even the sheets off her bed. That was quite a read. It was from the 1600s.
